According to the Code of Canon Law (Can. 872-874), a godparent must be a practicing Catholic, at least 16years old, who has received Baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation, living in harmony with Church teachings (i.e., attends Mass regularly, receives the Sacraments, and if married, was married by a Catholic priest.) Only one Catholic sponsor is required, but if two are chosen, they must be one male and one female. A Baptized, non-Catholic Christian can serve as a "Christian Witness" alongside a Catholic Godparent. Christian Witnesses cannot be Baptized Catholics who have left the faith. Godparents assist the parents in raising the child in the Catholic faith by providing spiritual support and living by example
