The SLO County Poet Laureate is the county’s most eminent and representative poet. An honorary position, the Poet Laureate celebrates San Luis Obispo County’s cultural heritage and promotes literacy and the literary arts among county residents.
Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Residency: Must reside in San Luis Obispo County
- Body of Work: A published body of work recognized for its excellence, preferably in book form
- Community Service: A history of service to the local poetry community, or a demonstrated willingness to serve
- Program Vision: An ability to develop and lead a program promoting poetry in the county during their two-year tenure
What the Role Involves
The Poet Laureate serves a two-year term and is expected to:
- Serve as a public representative of the literary arts community and SLO County through media, public speaking, and readings
- Design and lead a community engagement program or strategy to promote creative writing in the county during their tenure
- Be available for county events, arts programming, and collaborative opportunities as they arise
