  • Parade Route

    Parade starts at the east end of the eastern tip of Hayden Island in Portland, Oregon - in front of the Portland Yacht Club (1241 NE Marine Drive). Cruise 2 miles down river under the I-5 Bridge to end just west of the Railroad Bridge, where awards are given out and an after party ensues. A floating barge will provide restrooms, and a safe-boat tow will be available for non-motorized boats 1 hour before start (heading upstream) and 1 hour after the last boat finishes, to tow back upstream.

    Join boaters of all shapes and sizes as we parade between Hayden Island and the Bridgeton neighborhood.

    Registration required for safety purposes.

    WHAT: Smile Boat Parade in Portland's newest destination “North Waterfront”
    WHEN: Saturday, August 22nd, 11:00 AM start. Check In 9:00-10:30 AM 
    WHERE: North Portland Harbor on the Columbia River channel between Bridgeton & Hayden Island


    Local boaters of all sizes showcase their creativity, decking out their boats with flags and decorations, bringing smiles to everyone involved including onlookers from shore. The Smile Boat Parade captures the essence of enjoying water fun together!

  • Parade Schedule 

    9:30 AM

    CHECK IN - Check in and refreshments (coffee & donuts) available on marine radio, channel 68 or at Check in float at Hayden Island east end, look for flags and banners on float.

    10:30 AM

    LINE UP - All boats line up by groups: 

    1st group - power boats

    2nd group - Sailboats

    3rd group - non-motorized boats (row-canoe-kayak-paddleboards, etc.) 

    11:00 AM

    LAUNCH - 1st group - power boats. 2nd group - Sailboats. 3rd group - non-motorized boats (row-canoe-kayak-paddleboards, etc.)

    12:30 PM (afternoon) 

    AFTER PARTY - After cruising, sailing, rowing, or paddling the parade route, join boaters and neighbors for the after party. Tie up to the floating barge just west of the railroad bridge for awards and refreshments!

    The below list is not a comprehensive list, but covers many safety considerations.  Please review thoroughly.


    LIFE JACKETS ARE REQUIRED BY ALL PARTICIPANTS
    ABSOLUTELY NO ALCOHOL IS PERMITTED IN THE SMILE PARADE.
    Do not litter.
    If you fall from your boat, do your best to hold onto it, do not panic. Shout or whistle loudly.
    EVERYONE must stay in between the outer docks on bothe north and south sides of the channel. 
    Neither glass nor styro-foam are a good idea while on the river. Nonalcoholic beverages only permitted during the SMILE Parade.
    Be sure to bring sunglasses, hat and wear suntan lotion hydrate yourself prior to start time.

  • Participant Waiver

    This is a waiver and release. Please read it carefully before signing. 


    I, the undersigned, enter this Release and Waiver of liability and Assumption of Risk Agreement (“Agreement”) on behalf of myself, my personal representatives, next of kin, heirs, successors, and assigns.
    I make this Agreement in consideration of the Released Parties providing me with the opportunity to participate as a volunteer in this project.
    I understand that the SMILE Parade may include dangerous or hazardous activities that may result in injury or death and that the Project may take place on a location or under conditions that may be dangerous to me.
    I accept full personal responsibility for all risks arising from or relating to the SMILE Parade.
    My participation in the SMILE Parade is completely voluntary and I have neither received nor expect to receive any compensation for my participation in it.
    I agree to read, listen to and follow all safety instructions and procedures presented in conjunction with the SMILE Parade and to use my best judgment based upon my physical and mental abilities at all times, and to immediately terminate participation in the SMILE Parade if activities become too strenuous, difficult or hazardous for me.
    I agree that the activities necessary to complete the SMILE Parade have been fully and adequately explained to me and that I am physically and mentally capable of participating in the SMILE Parade without injuring myself in any manner.
    I agree to waive all liability of the Released Parties, discharge them, and covenant not to sue them for any liability, claims, sums, costs, or other expenses on my account that may be caused in whole or in part by my participation in the SMILE Parade.
    I agree that this Agreement shall act as a complete bar against all actions or claims that I might otherwise bring against the Released Parties, including negligence claims, arising from or related to the SMILE Parade.
    I understand that a photographer may be present to photograph the activities at the Parade and that I may be photographed while participating in the SMILE Parade. I agree that I will contact the photographer if I do not wish to be photographed.
    I hereby grant the Bridgeton Neighborhood Association (BNA) the irrevocable and unrestricted right to use and publish photographs of me, or in which I may be included. I hereby release Photographer and his/her legal representatives and assigns and BNA from all claims and liability relating to any such photographs.
    I make this Agreement for the benefit of BNA, other individual volunteers, project coordinators, sponsors, suppliers, supporters, and all private and public land owners on whose property the project described above may be located (collectively the “Released Parties), including, without limitation, the Released Parties’ employees, agents, personal representatives, next of kin, heirs, successors and assigns.
    I have read this Agreement, fully understand its terms, understand that I have given up substantial rights by signing it, and have signed it freely and without any inducement or assurance of any nature. I intend this Agreement to be a complete and unconditional release of all liability to the greatest extent allowed by law, and I further agree that if any portion of this Agreement is held invalid, then the balance of the Agreement shall continue in full force and effect.
