For the past three years, Earth Convergence has been working in Queens — in Astoria and Long Island City — hosting our annual earth month event, Earth Month Convergence that aims to nourish each other with food and music while uplifting cultural knowledge, sharing memories and stories from community members and neighbors, and supporting local and regional leaders working towards in ways that are sustainable with the Earth.
Forty years ago, local Astoria artists and residents, many living in NYCHA housing, reclaimed some of the Queens waterfront. They identified an abandoned lot and changed the illegal dumpsite into a lush and open art and community space.
Neighbors just like you turned an illegal waterfront dumpsite into Socrates Sculpture Park. Together, let’s think through what the next opportunity for community wellbeing can be right here in the neighborhood!
Over three, 3-4 hour workshops next Spring (dates TBD), you'll share your experiences, learn about the area, hear from your neighbors, and help shape a community plan for what comes next. You will be paid a stipend for your time, as well as provided food and translation.
Workshops are 3 - 4 hours each and, in order to respect the time of other participants, participants are expected to attend all 3 workshops. We're gathering residents from across the neighborhood, those who've been here for decades and those who arrived recently, across backgrounds and languages.
The goals of the project are to:
* Gather, analyze, and organize the issues, concerns, joys, wants/needs, and gaps that Astoria/LIC residents are facing daily
* Find the groups of people who are concerned with similar issues and work together towards a shared community-led project
