What does the TYOSSI program fee cover? What is included in my money?
Your TYOSSI program fee is an all-inclusive package. From the moment
we collect you at the airport to the moment we drop you back, everything
below is fully paid for and arranged by TYOSSI at no extra cost to you.

✔ FULLY INCLUDED IN YOUR PROGRAM FEE

volunteer house directly to island school construction and community project sites on Azizakpe and surrounding Volta estuary islands — in and out, at no extra cost.

• All teaching and classroom materials: Books, stationery, and all supplies needed to assist local teachers in schools are provided by TYOSSI.

• On-site supervision and 24/7 support: Trained TYOSSI staff supervise all project work. The TYOSSI team is available around the clock for any need, question, or concern. You are never left alone.

• Orientation and welcome sessions: An introduction to Ghanaian culture, local customs, safety guidelines, and basic Ghanaian language to help you settle in confidently from day one.

• Emergency hospital transport and assistance: If you suffer a sudden illness, accident, or injury at any time — whether at the project site, the volunteer house, or anywhere in Ghana — TYOSSI will immediately rush you to the nearest major hospital for urgent treatment, stay with you, and ensure you receive care without delay. Your safety is our absolute first priority.

• All selected weekend tours and excursions: Every tour destination you choose in the application form below is fully included in your fee. TYOSSI organises, accompanies, and pays for all tours. See Question 6 for the full tour descriptions.

What is NOT included? What must I pay for from my own pocket money?

TYOSSI's program fee covers all your essential daily needs. The
following are personal items that you are responsible for paying yourself
from your own pocket money.

• Your international flight to Ghana: You must book and
  pay for your own flights to and from Kotoka International
  Airport (ACC), Accra.
• Your Ghana entry visa: Most volunteers need a
  single-entry visa to enter Ghana. You must apply for and
  pay for your own visa through your nearest Ghana
  Embassy or High Commission before travelling.
• Your travel and medical insurance: Insurance is
  mandatory for all TYOSSI volunteers. You must arrange
  and pay for your own comprehensive travel and medical
  insurance before arriving. See Question 8 for full details.
• Personal drinks purchased outside the
  accommodation: Bottled water bought outside the house,
  soft drinks, fruit juices, alcohol, and any drinks purchased
  for yourself personally are your own expense.
• Personal toiletries and shopping: Shampoo, soap for
  personal use, toothpaste, snacks, biscuits, clothing, or any
  other personal items you wish to buy are paid for from your
  own pocket money.
• Hospital and medical bills: While TYOSSI rushes you to
  hospital in any emergency and stays by your side, all
  medical bills and treatment costs must be covered by your
  personal travel insurance. This is exactly why valid

insurance is non-negotiable before arrival. Outside of the personal items listed above, you should not need to spend any extra money during your stay. Everything else is taken care of by TYOSSI.

How much does the program cost in US Dollars and Euros?

The official TYOSSI program fee is set in Ghana Cedis (GHS) — Ghana's national currency. Below are the approximate amounts in US Dollars and Euros, calculated at today's exchange rate of $1 USD = GHS 11.20.

• 1 to 2 weeks: GHS 25,000 ≈ $2,232 USD / €2,070 EUR
• 3 to 4 weeks: GHS 35,000 ≈ $3,125 USD / €2,895 EUR

Currency exchange rates change daily. The exact USD or EUR amount at the time of your confirmed placement will be communicated to you by TYOSSI. Full payment instructions will be provided after your application is accepted.

Where will I stay? What is the accommodation like?

All volunteers stay at TYOSSI Volunteer House, located at Solikope, Ada Foah, Ada East District, Greater Accra Region, Ghana. This is TYOSSI's official headquarters, managed directly by Moses Adonu, Founder and Executive Director.

• Volunteer bedrooms with mosquito nets for your protection
• Shower with running water
• Flush toilet with toilet paper provided
• Wash basin with soap
• Dining hall where all three daily meals are served
• Meeting hall for orientation, Ghanaian language lessons, and volunteer gatherings
• Volunteer relaxation and social area
• TYOSSI administrative office — the team is always nearby and accessible
• Full-time resident security officer on site, 24 hours a day

If additional space is needed, overflow accommodation is available at Vicon Lodge (21 rooms) and Kikwor Hotel (32 fully air-conditioned rooms), both located just across the road. All placements are confirmed by TYOSSI before your arrival.

What work will I be doing as a volunteer?

TYOSSI's volunteer programme is built around practical, hands-on
community development that creates real, visible, and lasting change.

No prior construction experience is needed - full on-site training and supervision is provided by the TYOSSI team for every task.

✔ VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES - ALL SUPERVISED AND FULLY
SUPPORTED

• School construction and renovation: Block-laying,
  plastering, painting, interior and exterior decoration, and
  building work at schools in Ada Foah and on the Volta
  estuary islands. Schools currently supported include
  Anyakpor R/C Basic School, Gorm D/A Basic School, Big
  Ada D/A Basic School, and Luhoese D/A Basic School.
• Clinic and health centre construction and renovation:
  Building and renovating medical facilities to serve families
  and children in local communities who have limited access
  to healthcare.
• Classroom teaching support: Assisting qualified local
  teachers in English language and Mathematics lessons at
  primary and junior secondary schools in Ada Foah and
  island communities.
• Community outreach: Distributing food, school uniforms,
  books, and educational supplies to children in remote and

island villages — including Azizakpe, Aflive, and Alorkpem
— by vehicle and by boat.

• Island project visits by wooden boat: Travelling by traditional wooden boat from the TYOSSI volunteer house across the Volta estuary to island school construction and community project sites. This is a truly unique experience that few international visitors ever have the opportunity to share.

What weekend tours are included in my fee? Where will I go?

TYOSSI organises and accompanies weekend tours and excursions to some of Ghana's most spectacular, historic, and unforgettable destinations. Every tour you select in the application form is fully included in your program fee - at absolutely no extra cost. You choose the destinations you want; TYOSSI arranges everything.

Ada Estuary, Azizakpe Island & Maranatha Beach

By traditional wooden boat Approx. 1 hour 25 minutes from Ada Foah

This is one of the most beautiful and unique experiences in all of Ghana. TYOSSI takes you by traditional wooden boat along the Volta River, passing through the channels of the estuary where traditional fishermen cast their nets in their dugout canoes — a way of life unchanged for generations. You visit the island community of Azizakpe, where TYOSSI's own school projects are based, and meet the children and families your volunteer work directly supports. The boat journey continues to Maranatha Beach — the extraordinary natural point where the mighty Volta River finally meets the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can relax on a wide, peaceful, natural beach, watch the river and sea merge together in a breathtaking meeting of waters, and experience the beauty and tranquillity of this remote and unforgettable place.

Cape Coast Castle

Approx. 265 km About 3.5 hours drive from Ada Foah

Cape Coast Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most historically significant and emotionally powerful places in all of West Africa. Built by European traders, it became one of the largest centres of the Atlantic slave trade. Thousands of enslaved African men, women, and children were held in its underground dungeons before being shipped across the ocean. Walking through those dungeons and standing at the "Door of No Return" — through which enslaved people passed onto the ships — is a deeply moving and unforgettable experience that changes every visitor who passes through it. The guided tour tells the full and honest history of this extraordinary place.

Kakum National Park — Canopy Walkway & Rainforest

Approx. 300 km About 4 hours drive from Ada Foah (33 km north of Cape Coast)

Kakum National Park is one of the great natural wonders of Ghana. The park's most famous feature is its canopy walkway — seven suspension bridges stretching 350 metres through the treetops, suspended 40 metres above the ancient rainforest floor. This is one of only three canopy walkways in the entire continent of Africa. Walking across the bridges, high above the forest canopy, with the sounds of birds and wildlife all around, is a truly thrilling and unforgettable adventure. The park is home to forest elephants, Diana monkeys, giant bongo antelopes, over 250 bird species, and thousands of butterflies. Guided forest walks are also available. The umbrella trees of Kakum's ancient rainforest — towering hardwoods with wide-spreading canopies — are among the most spectacular natural sights in Ghana.

Wli Waterfalls — Volta Region

Approx. 230-280 km About 4-5 hours drive from Ada Foah

Wli Waterfalls — pronounced "Vlee" — is the highest waterfall in West Africa, located deep in the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary in the Volta Region of Ghana, near the border with Togo. The falls plunge 80 metres over dramatic cliffs into a natural pool below. The hike to the lower falls is easy and beautiful — a gentle 45-minute walk through lush rainforest, crossing nine wooden footbridges over the Agumatsa River. Along the trail you will see a huge colony of fruit

bats clinging to the cliffs, as well as monkeys, baboons, hundreds of bird species, and thousands of colourful butterflies. At the falls, swimming is possible in the natural pool. The experience is cool, peaceful, and completely spectacular.

Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary — Volta Region

Approx. 200–230 km · About 3.5–4 hours drive from Ada Foah

The Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Ghana. This is a community-run sanctuary in the Volta Region where Mona monkeys live completely freely in the forest — they are sacred to the local community and have been protected for generations. The monkeys are so accustomed to humans that they will climb directly onto your shoulders, sit on your arms, and take bananas from your hands. There is no barrier between you and the animals. It is a close, personal, and joyful encounter with wild primates that most visitors describe as one of the highlights of their entire time in Ghana. You will select your preferred tour destinations in the application form below. TYOSSI will confirm the final schedule and all arrangements after your placement is accepted. All transportation, organisation, and accompaniment for every selected tour is included in your program fee.

How do I get to Ada Foah? Where do I fly to?

INCLUDED

• Fly to: Kotoka International Airport (airport code: ACC), Accra, Ghana. This is Ghana's main international airport, served by major airlines from Europe, North America, the Middle East, and worldwide.
• Distance: Ada Foah is approximately 100 km from Accra — about a 2-hour drive.
• TYOSSI picks you up: Airport collection is fully included in your program fee. TYOSSI will personally meet you at the airport on your arrival date and drive you to Ada Foah. Simply confirm your flight details with TYOSSI after your application is accepted and a TYOSSI representative will be waiting for you when you land.
• TYOSSI drops you off: At the end of your stay, TYOSSI drives you back to Kotoka International Airport for your departure flight — also fully included in your fee.

• Your international flight tickets to Accra (ACC) and back to your home country — booked and paid for by you.
• Your Ghana entry visa — arranged and paid for by you before departure. See Question 9.

What happens if I get sick or injured? Is medical care included?

The safety and wellbeing of every TYOSSI volunteer is our absolute first priority at all times. If you are injured at a project site, become sick at the volunteer house, or have any kind of health emergency anywhere in Ghana during your stay, TYOSSI will respond immediately.

• Immediate assistance: TYOSSI staff will come to you without delay the moment any health emergency occurs.
• Emergency hospital transport: TYOSSI will rush you directly to the nearest major hospital for urgent treatment — this is included in your program fee.
• We stay with you: A TYOSSI team member will remain at your side throughout the emergency and communicate with your emergency contact if required.
• 24/7 on-site presence: A full-time resident security officer is at the volunteer house at all times, and the TYOSSI team is reachable around the clock.

• All hospital bills, doctor fees, medical treatment costs, and prescription charges must be paid by your own travel and medical insurance. This is exactly why insurance is mandatory for every TYOSSI volunteer.
• Emergency medical evacuation costs, if required, must also be covered by your insurance.

Important: Volunteers who arrive in Ghana without valid travel and medical insurance will not be permitted to begin their placement. Please arrange comprehensive insurance well in advance of your travel date.

Do I need a visa to volunteer in Ghana?

 

✘ NOT INCLUDED — VISA IS YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY

 

Most international volunteers require a single-entry tourist or volunteer visa to enter Ghana for a short stay of 1 week to 3 months.

 

 Citizens of ECOWAS member states (West African countries) may enter Ghana without a visa.

 

 You must check the specific visa requirements for your nationality with the nearest Ghana Embassy or High Commission in your country — well in advance of your travel date.

 

You are responsible for applying for, obtaining, and paying for your own visa. TYOSSI cannot apply for a visa on your behalf.

 

✔ HOW TYOSSI CAN HELP

 

Once your application is accepted, TYOSSI can provide you with an official invitation letter from the organisation, on TYOSSI letterhead, to support your visa application at the Ghana Embassy if required.

Is TYOSSI a legitimate and registered organisation? Will I need a background check?

 

TYOSSI is a fully registered, legally verified, and internationally partnered non-profit organisation. We work directly with children, orphans, and vulnerable young people in island and mainland communities in the Ada East District of Ghana. The safety and protection of every child in our care is non-negotiable.

 Before confirming your placement, TYOSSI may request a police clearance certificate from your home country. This is standard practice for any serious organisation working with children and young people.

 

 If requested, you must obtain this from your national police authority and submit it to TYOSSI before arrival. The process for obtaining a police clearance varies by country — please check with your local police service.
