• About the Mini-Grants Program

     The Berkeley Disaster Preparedness Neighborhood Network and Collective Resilience are excited to be collaborating to pilot test our first mini-grants program. Funding will support projects for neighborhood groups and community facilities (places of worship, community centers, libraries, schools, etc) with the goals of preparing for natural and climate emergencies, while building community ties. Any and all creative ideas will be considered! We will prioritize applications which:

    • Serve 30 more more individuals
    • Directly serve underserved neighborhoods and high-risk populations .
    • Come from emerging or inactive groups

We will prioritize applications which: ** Serve 30 more more individuals ** Directly benefit underserved neighborhoods and high-risk populations ** Come from new, emerging or "fizzled" groups ** Combine community building with disaster preparedness

  • Are you applying for a seed grant or implementation grant?

    SEED GRANTS (up to $500):

    • For new or emerging neighborhoo groups
    • Supports neighborhood groups just getting organized, building relationshiops, and launching their first preparedness events or projects. 

    CULTIVATION GRANTS (up to $1000):

    • For established neighborhood groups with an existing track record, wanting to expand or strengthen their preparedness efforts OR
    • community facilities

  • If applying for a CULTIVATION grant, tell us about any disaster preparedness and community organizing your group has done in the past.
  • Background Information

  • Tell us about your group or organization and who you serve. Some guiding questions:

    • History and purpose: Why did your group or organization originally form? How long have you been around?
    • Community Engagement and Planning: Approximately how many people do you serve? What kinds of activities have you planned to build relationships with neighbors or community members? Have you surveyed community members or done an asset mapping to find out what people want and need? 
    • Disaster Preparedness and Response: What are some examples of events or projects you have planned to prepare for or respond to disasters?
    • Challenges: Have you experienced any challenges or barriers to your planning efforts? If you are applying for a seed grant, let us where you are in the process of becoming a group (it's okay to say that you are just getting started!).

    • What do you want to accomplish? What might success look like?
    • What are the the main activities (which can include planning) and what is the estimated timeline for them?
    • How will it contribute to your neighborhood or site being better prepared for emergencies?
    • How will support strengthening community ties and social cohesion?
    • Will it support a specific type of emergency (such as extreme heat, heat or atmospheric rivers)?
