  • Justin has 12 years of experience as an engineer, where he built his career solving complex problems and adapting to new tools and challenges. He now wants to bring that experience into the classroom to help students become strong problem solvers. The work environment students are entering is changing fast, with new technology and teams that demand creativity, critical thinking, and flexibility. His goal is to teach them not just the fundamentals, but how to approach unfamiliar problems with confidence and build solutions that last.

  • PREREQUISITES

  • Students must be able to listen carefully, follow instructions exactly, and demonstrate responsible behavior in a lab setting. Safety is the highest priority in this course. Students are expected to consistently follow all instructor directions, safety procedures, and classroom expectations during every lab activity. Students who are unable or unwilling to follow established safety requirements may be restricted from participating in hands-on activities until they can safely do so. These expectations are in place to protect both the student and those around them.
  • COURSE DESCRIPTION

  • A hands-on introduction to residential electrical systems designed for teens exploring STEM, engineering, or the electrical trades. Students will learn core electrical theory, tool safety, basic wiring methods, and National Electrical Code fundamentals while building practical skills in a controlled educational environment.
  • Students will learn how electrical power travels from the utility meter through a home's electrical system, how common residential circuits function, how to wire receptacles, single-pole, 3-way, and 4-way switches, lighting circuits, and the purpose of GFCI and AFCI protection. Students will also learn to read and interpret basic residential electrical plans and wiring diagrams.
  • All wiring projects are completed with power disconnected on purpose-built educational training boards. After each project is inspected and approved by the instructor, circuits may be energized by the instructor for demonstration and testing purposes. Students will learn the proper use of multimeters, non-contact voltage testers, and plug-in circuit testers while following established safety procedures. Students will not perform work on residential electrical systems, service panels, energized branch circuits, or occupied structures.
  • This course provides a safe, structured introduction to residential electrical principles while emphasizing proper safety practices, critical thinking, problem-solving, and industry-standard workmanship. It is an excellent foundation for students interested in the skilled trades, engineering, construction, or developing practical DIY skills.
  • STUDENT OUTCOME

  • Students will understand the principles of residential electrical systems, basic circuit design, safe wiring practices, and proper testing techniques while working in a controlled educational environment. Leave with a basic knowledge of how to wire house hold safely. Understand how to wire all basic household circuits.

  • SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS

  • Supply fee will cover a basic tool set students will take home with them.

  • Students will be expected to take home a problem and come back with a wiring diagram to solve for the issue. They will also have a safety test that they need to complete before working with live electricity.
