Artist Bio - John Sandoval
John Sandoval is a self-taught scratchboard artist whose work reflects discipline, patience, and a strong eye for detail. Raised in Southern California, he later moved to Brookings, Oregon, where he lived for seven years before relocating to Arizona in 2023. It was there, in the Arizona desert and Southwestern landscape, that his artistic journey truly began.
John served eight years in the military before continuing his professional career in the private sector. After retirement, he discovered scratchboard art as a powerful outlet for creativity, focus, and personal expression.
His artwork is built on dramatic contrast, fine linework, and the careful use of light against darkness. Through scratching, hatching, and detailed texture, he creates museum-grade scratchboard pieces that feel both rugged and refined. His subjects often reflect Western heritage, wildlife, Southwestern themes, and cultural inspiration, showing a deep appreciation for nature, storytelling and tradition.
John’s military background and professional experience helped shape the dedication, precision, and commitment to continuous improvement that define his artistic style today.
