Musicians who have been contracted by Border CrosSing in the past should fill out this form, but are not required to send audition materials.
Our Artistic Director will review submissions and contact candidates for an audition. In-person auditions are preferred and will occur at Unity Church-Unitarian (733 Portland Ave, Saint Paul, MN 55104), but auditions via Zoom are also possible.
The audition includes the following elements:
- Two prepared excerpts that will be sent to the candidates one week before their scheduled audition.
- The candidates will be asked to sing these two excerpts in a variety of ways (e.g. as a soloist, senza vibrato).
- Vocalises to evaluate tessitura and flexibility.
- An interview with the Artistic Director and Border CrosSing staff.
Requirements:
- Strong and enthusiastic work ethic.
- Extraordinary musical abilities.
- Flexibility to switch between musical styles and sing both as a soloist and ensemble member.
- Solid singing diction skills in a variety of languages. Familiarity with Spanish variants, non-standard Latin, and/or Indigenous American languages will be given strong consideration.
Special consideration will be given to singers with strong, demonstrable connections with Latine/Latinx culture and community, and singers from backgrounds currently underrepresented in classical choral music in the United States.
We are based in Minneapolis–St. Paul, Minnesota and we will consider candidates located elsewhere. We are not able to cover transportation for out-of-town singers at this time, but we can organize lodging and meals. Our musician rates for this season are $37/hr of rehearsal and $47.50/hr of performance/recording.
