    • Ringworm Treatment Assistant 
    • Ringworm Medical Cleaning Assistant

    This is a seasonal summer volunteer role from July to August on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.

    Please note that we are looking to have volunteers start immediately.

    The following pages go over the role and give you the option to select whether or not you would like to join the team.

    Role description:

    The Ringworm Treatment assistant plays a key role in supporting the medical team with ringworm treatment for affected cats. This position is ideal for individuals interested in animal care and veterinary treatments. This treatment is essential for managing and reducing the spread of infection while ensuring the cats remain comfortable throughout their recovery. Volunteers will be trained in safe handling techniques, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and procedures for cleaning and disinfecting the treatment area. This position is ideal for volunteers who are detail-oriented, comfortable handling cats, and committed to supporting the medical needs of shelter animals.


    Responsibilities: 

    • Set up designated area for treatments .
    • Handle animals safely and gently to ensure their comfort during treatment.
    • Administer lime sulfur baths to ringworm-positive puppies, cats or kittens. 
    • Collect samples for DTM plates as directed.
    • Perform visual exam to identify visible lesions and a Wood’s lamp exam to identify non-visible lesions.
    • Clean and disinfect all . 
    • Follow all safety, handling, and infection-control protocols. 
    • Sweep and disinfect the treatment area floors.

    Available shifts:

    Both available shifts are at the Redwood City location. You can take one or both shifts. Volunteers are expected to come weekly.

    • Tuesdays, 4-6pm
    • Fridays, 4-6pm

    Training Required:

    • 2 afternoon training sessions focused on handling and bathing. These will be 3:30-6pm on Tuesday and Friday.

    Qualifications:

    • At least 16 years old.
    • Able to commit to 4 months of weekly volunteering.
    • Comfortable and confident handling cats of various temperaments 
    • Attention to detail and ability to follow specific procedures 
    • Willing to use personal protective equipment (PPE) consistently 
    • Detail-oriented for charting affected areas and recording observations  
    • Ability to follow proper cleaning and disinfection procedures 
    • Reliable and punctual

This position is ideal for individuals interested in animal care and veterinary treatments. Medical cleaning is essential for managing and reducing the likelihood of reinfection of cats being treated for ringworm. Volunteers will be trained in disinfecting techniques, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and procedures for cleaning and disinfecting the treatment area. This position is ideal for volunteers who are detail-oriented, comfortable being around and handling cats, and committed to supporting the medical needs of shelter animals.  

    Resposibilities

    • Set up designated area for cat treatments 
    • Handle cats safely and gently to ensure their comfort during treatment 
    • Administer lime sulfur baths to ringworm-positive cats 
    • Collect samples for DTM plates as directed 
    • Perform visual exam to identify visible lesions and a Wood’s lamp exam to identify non-visible lesions. Chart and track affected areas, noting hair loss or skin changes. 
    • Clean and disinfect all treatment and clinic areas after use. 
    • Follow all safety, handling, and infection-control protocols. 
    • Sweep and disinfect the treatment area floors .

    Available Shifts

    Both available shifts are at the Redwood City Location. You can take one or both shifts. Volunteers are expected to come weekly.

    • Ability to follow proper cleaning and disinfection procedures 
    • Reliable and punctual

    VOLUNTEER AGREEMENT

    • I am a volunteer performing services at Pets In Need. I understand and agree that these services are charitable in nature and entirely voluntary on my part, and that I will receive no remuneration of any kind for them.I will treat all animals, staff and other volunteers with respect.
    • I will abide by all PIN policies and procedures and follow the instructions of PIN staff.
    • I agree to immediately report any problems that arise to the appropriate PIN staff.
    • I will not share information about PIN policies and procedures with other animal welfare agencies.
    • I understand the potential safety risks of working with animals, and I attest that I am physically capable of carrying out my volunteer duties.
    • I understand that I may not bring friends or relatives with me while performing my volunteer duties.
    • Pets In Need has my permission to use any photographs taken of me to promote and publicize Pets In Need programs or events. I understand that all prints, negatives, and digital images become the sole property of Pets In Need and may be used without payment or prior notification.
    • I understand that PIN reserves the exclusive right to select or not to select potential volunteers at any point before services are provided or after placement in the program.
    • I understand that all data, materials, knowledge and information generated through, originating from, or having to do with PIN or persons associated with our activities is to be considered privileged and confidential and is not to be disclosed to any third party.

    VACCINATIONS

    • I understand that I may obtain Tetanus and Rabies vaccinations for myself if I choose, but that Pets In Need does not require it. I understand that because I will be handling animals, it is important to discuss these vaccinations with my physician. I release Pets In Need from all responsibility regarding my decision, and I understand that whatever decision I make is at my own risk.
    • Pets In Need highly recommends that staff and volunteers be vaccinated against COVID-19 but does not require it. I understand that my volunteer duties will put me in direct contact with other volunteers, staff, and visitors.
    • I understand the possible risk of bringing home illnesses from the shelter to personal pets or vice versa. Further, I understand that I can mitigate the risk by keeping my personal pets current on vaccinations.

    WAIVER OF STATE COMPENSATION BENEFIT

    • Pets In Need volunteers are not classified as “employees” and are therefore ineligible for Worker’s Compensation coverage for injuries that might be sustained while volunteering for Pets In Need.
    • I certify that I am covered by a personal, group, or employment related health and/or accidental insurance policy that will cover any injury that I might receive while volunteering on or premises for Pets In Need.

    WAIVER OF CLAIMS

    • Intending to be legally bound, I hereby for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators, waive and release any and all rights and claims against the persons and organizations affiliated with Pets In Need. I further attest that I am physically fit to participate in this volunteer program.
    • I understand that Pets in Need is not responsible for providing compensation for any damages, including those caused by animals in its care. I am releasing Pets In Need from liability now and in the future for damages to persons or property caused by animals owned by Pets In Need.

    My signature below certifies that I have read this document and that I understand and agree to the conditions set forth above. This agreement is executed freely and voluntarily, and with full knowledge by the undersigned.
