    Immersive Storytelling Lab

Create powerful stories using cutting-edge technology.

Build Your Own AI Chatbot App

AVELA’s Small Language Model Chatbot & AI Biases course gives students the chance to build their own AI chatbot app while learning how artificial intelligence actually works beneath the surface. Over 40 hours, students move from AI fundamentals and bias awareness to hands-on Swift app development, UI/UX design in Figma, prompt engineering, dataset curation, local model fine-tuning, and deployment using Apple’s MLX tools. Rather than simply using black-box AI tools, students learn how data, code, prompts, and design choices shape chatbot behavior, privacy, accuracy, and fairness. By the end of the course, students will have a working chatbot prototype they can demo, add to GitHub, and include on their resumes as a real technical project. The course also builds workforce readiness by helping students practice debugging, product design, ethical AI decision-making, technical presentation, and portfolio development, giving them the skills and confidence to pursue future careers in software engineering, data science, UI/UX design, and other technology-driven fields!
