What We Miss With Suicidal Parts
A Lunch and Learn | 1.5 NBCC Hours
Most of us were trained to assess suicide risk. Few of us were taught to understand the suicidal part itself.
We learned the screeners, the protocols, the safety plans. We didn't learn what a suicidal part is protecting, or how to be with it once it's in the room.
This is not a protocol training. Understanding and connection with the part. Respect for the part. That is the intervention — not a scale, not an assessment, not insurance or organizational demands.
This 90-minute session is an IFS-informed introduction to suicidal parts — the misconceptions that shape how we respond, the clinical considerations that matter, and how to enter these conversations with more steadiness and compassion.
We are looking at suicidal parts in a way mainstream suicide trainings leave out. That includes the impact of intergenerational trauma, racialized trauma, colonization and capitalism, and oppression. This training is intersectional and honors the Global Majority, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ communities.
This session is a preview of Understanding and Working with Suicidal Parts, the five-week intensive training series beginning Monday, October 26, 2026.
Who this training is for
Social workers, psychologists, mental health professionals, students, and interns. No prior IFS experience required.
Many of us carry our own histories with suicide. Tend to yourself as we go.
This is the noon hour. Bring your lunch. Come as you are.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe how the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model understands suicidal parts and the protective roles they serve.
2. Identify common misconceptions about suicidal parts that shape clinical assessment and response.
3. Explain how intergenerational trauma, racialized trauma, colonization, and oppression influence the experience and expression of suicidal parts.
4. Name at least two IFS-informed practices for approaching conversations about suicidal parts with connection and respect.
