• 2026-2027 Department of Design: Need-based Scholarship

  • BA & BFA majors within the Department of Design are eligible to apply for a limited number of need-based scholarships. These funds have been made available to support students within BYU's Department of Design who may be financially struggling. They are meant to offset the cost of tuition and class materials, and to assist disadvantaged students in continuing or completing their education.

    Qualifications:

Recipients must generally be registered for a minimum of 12 credits per semester, or 6 credits per term. They must be admitted into a BA or BFA major in the Department of Design during the year for which they are applying.

Any awarded amount applies first toward university financial holds, and then will automatically be deposited to a student's checking acccount if all obligations have been met. Awards are non-transferable.

    Expectations:

Before you apply for a Design Department Need-based Scholarship, you must certify you have already exhausted all your financial options, including family, extra/different employment, and other loans/scholarships. If you haven't yet, call a financial aid counselor at BYU Enrollment Services (801-422-4104) to set-up an appointment with them. They will help you fill out a FAFSA if you haven't yet, and advise you about your financial aid eligibility for a variety of opportunities, including:

    • Pell Grants (if you're under 24)
    • BYU's need-based scholarship
    • Long term federal loan

    Applicants are required to submit:

    • Contact Information
    • A detailed budget spreadsheet and narrative
    • Estimated costs for tuition and course-related materials

Due to limited amount of funding, scholarships may not always be awarded up to the full requested amount. This is done on a discretionary basis. Decisions will be made based on a combination of stated need and budget narrative. Students may submit FAFSA EFC Information, but this is not required. We encourage all Department of Design students who are in need to apply.

Applications are due by July 31st at 11:59pm MDT for Fall 2026 & Winter 2027

Upon notification of acceptance, recipients of scholarships must provide a thank you letter to grantors within two weeks in order to receive their funds.

NOTE: Applications cannot be saved or completed later. Scroll down to see the information you need to submit BEFORE you begin.

  • NOTES ON THE BUDGET

The budget and its accompanying budget narrative are essential factors in our scholarship process. While this scholarship is intended to offset the financial burden of awardee's tuition and course-related expenses, it does not support all aspects of the awardee's financial need (e.g. rent, food, or the expenses of a spouse or dependent). Instead, the detailed, thoughtful accounting of both income and expenses requested below will help provide context for the applicant's need, and help scholarship committee determine where tuition-based scholarship funds can be of the most help.
  •  Please note the following when completing the fillable budget template:

    • The requested amount should match (or be less than) the expected burdent of academic expenses shown in the final line of the budget spreadsheet.
    • "Course-related expenses" is defined here as materials required for a specific class or medium. Individual projects such as BFA capstone exhibitions/projects are eligible for Experiential Learning funding and should be requested through that application process.
    • If you are married or have dependents, please do not factor their educational expenses into the budget template.
    • Please utilize the "quantities" fields carefully. For example, account for the cost of tuition per semester under "Amount" and then under "Quantity" enter the number of semesters in which you intend to be enrolled.
    • While you are welcome to share your FAFSA information, we recognize that these applications are not always accessible or reflective of current need. Our decisions may take FAFSA into account, but will be largely based on self-reported budget spreadsheet and narrative.
    • The budget narrative may be entered in the three text boxes below. It should be detailed and provide additional context to the expenses and income listed in your budget spreadsheet.

All information shared here is considered confidential and will not be shared outside of the faculty reviewer panel. If you need assistance completing this application, please reach out to Stephanie Miller at stephanie_miller@byu.edu to set up an appointment (either in person or via Zoom) to go over your budget spreadsheet and narrative.
