    About the STAGED READING format:

What is a staged reading? It is well-rehearsed with a focus on relationships and emotional movement in the play, with enough (minimal) blocking and physical movement to convey the essence of the characters relationships and the actions of the play. There will be no props or costumes and no music stands. All actors move and speak throughout the staging.

    About The Play:

The Real Thing is famously Stoppard at his most personal, emotional and soulful. To get it off the boards, it must be a bracing experience for an audience, even in a staged reading. By that I mean that the audience resonates with the play in such a way that they are touched deeply by who the characters are and what they are going through. The play lives on so many levels, deeply personal and packed with ideas and emotions. It’s about many things, but the key to the play is love - experiencing it, losing it, sharing it, growing it… it’s depth and maturity, as well as fun and flirty.

I’m asking actors to delve deeply in developing character and breaking down scenes. We’ll have a few more rehearsals than is usual for a staged reading, (not more that 3 or 4, and you’ll only be called for scenes you are in). Rehearsals will involve evenings for scene work and an extended rehearsal on a weekend day to put the play together. I’m more than happy to meet privately or with scene partners to work outside of scheduled rehearsals.

Rehearsals will take place at my home in Fort Bragg

    Steve Siler (Director)
