The Walgreens at 5300 Third Street closed in February 2025, leaving a large commercial storefront empty at one of the neighborhood's most visible corners. For many neighbors, that store was more than a pharmacy. It anchored daily needs on the corridor, and its closure pulled real services out of the community. A proposal is now before the City to replace the former Walgreens with an AutoZone auto parts and accessories store. The new use would occupy the existing building. No expansion is proposed, and only minor interior improvements are planned. This site has reached a decision point. Because the AutoZone is a formula retail business on a corridor with special formula retail rules, the proposal needs Conditional Use approval from the San Francisco Planning Commission. The Commission, not just the applicant, will decide whether this use belongs here, and community input is a formal part of that review. The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on this proposal on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 12:00 PM in Room 400 at City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place.
