• Public Perception of Vaccinations and RSV Awareness

    Research questionnaire on beliefs, knowledge, perceptions, and acceptance of vaccines and RSV prevention strategies against infectious diseases circulating on the CAS islands (Curaçao, Aruba & Sint Maarten).

    This survey asks about parents’ and expecting parents’ views on vaccines, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and ways to prevent RSV. This study is part of the RSV Prevention Roadmap. The project looks at possible ways to prevent RSV in Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten.

    We work together with local healthcare organizations on each island.

    In Aruba: JGZ, DVG, HOH, and LABHOH.
    In Curaçao: GMN, LabdeMed, MLS, ADC, and CMC.
    In Sint Maarten: SMMC, SLS, WIMA, and the Ministry of VSA.

    Healthcare professionals have noticed that more people in the Caribbean have concerns about vaccines. However, there is not much research about what parents think about vaccines and RSV prevention in the CAS islands.

    This survey aims to learn more about your views on vaccines and other ways to prevent illness, especially RSV. The results will be shared with the participating healthcare organizations and may help with future decisions about RSV prevention on each island.

    Who is this survey for?

  • Before today, had you heard of RSV?

  • RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common virus that spreads easily from person to person. It affects the nose, throat, and lungs. RSV can cause mild symptoms, such as a runny nose or cough, but it can also cause serious illness, such as lung infection. (PAHO, 2024)

  • Was your child ever infected with RSV?

  • Severe symptoms of RSV:

    • Fast breathing
    • Wheezing (sounds like noisy breathing)
    • Breathing that is hard work – you may see the ribs or skin under the neck sucking in or nostrils flaring when they breathe. Younger babies may bob their heads when breathing.
    • Acting unsettled and restless
    • Fever (temperature of 38°C or more)
    • Sore throat
    • Trouble eating and drinking due to shortness of breath, sore throat, mucus, and a blocked nose.
  • What would you do if your child has one or more of the severe symptoms of RSV?

  • Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten are exploring possible RSV prevention strategies, such as vaccination during pregnancy or protection for babies shortly after birth.
