Welcome to the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA) and the IREC! Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us as we have a need for a variety of volunteers with skill sets in many areas.

Volunteers may be asked to assist in areas that may or may not relate to their specific expertise. While we strive to find a spot for all volunteers, we may be full to capacity for your specific skills. Make sure to read the FAQ, Code of Conduct, and understand the roles and responsibilities of an ESRA and IREC volunteer.

Volunteer Availability, Participation, and Team Preferences
Volunteerism with ESRA notionally starts during the US academic year depending on the roles you may wish to assist with. Some roles may start with monthly meetings but quickly transition to weekly meetings as we get closer to competition dates. Attendance onsite during the week-long event in Midland, Texas is HIGHLY DESIRABLE but we understand that is not always possible. A critical roles which do not require onsite attendance is a Competition Judge responsible for scoring student technical paper submissions. Please consider this role if you cannot attend onsite

Dates for the 2027 IREC are June 14 until June 19, 2027 (closing ceremony is June 19th 6pm).

I understand that the IREC and ESRA may not be able to cover any personal expenses, hotel fees, etc. Some meals (typically lunches and some dinners) and Gatorade/water will be provided onsite to all active volunteers.
I understand that my participation in person at the IREC carries certain risks including but not limited to long duration (12 hours) exposure to high temperatures (greater than 100F) in a dry desert environment, exposure to insects or wildlife that may pose a threat to health, exposure to plants and other natural elements that may pose risk of injury. Despite these risks, I attest that I am able and willing to participate in the event and will sign a legal waiver to this effect (link to be provided prior to event).
