The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming (UW) announces the fall and spring cycles of its Travel Grant Program. The AHC offers a total of ten travel grants annually; five grants each in the spring and fall application cycles.
Each grant provides $750 to support research projects that utilize the Center's extensive collections. We welcome applications from a diverse range of scholars at all stages of their academic careers from graduate students to established scholars.
Research Areas
The AHC is a public research institution with collections of local, regional, and national significance. The Center also serves as UW’s rare books library and university archives. With more than 90,000 cubic feet of material and 3,500 collections, the AHC stands among the largest non-governmental repositories in the nation.
The AHC's collections support research in a wide range of subject areas, including:
- Wyoming and the American West
- Mining and petroleum industries
- Air and rail transportation
- Environment and conservation
- Popular entertainment (radio, television, film, and popular music)
- Journalism
- U.S. military history
The Toppan Rare Books Library's subject areas include:
- American West
- British and American literature
- Exploration and travel
- Hunting and fishing
- Historic children's books
- Book arts

Application Requirements
To apply for a travel grant, please submit the following:
- A completed application form (see below).
- A brief project description (500-1000 words) that includes:
- An overview of your research question(s) and how your research relates to the AHC's collections.
- A description of the specific AHC collections you plan to use and how they will support your research.
- Any anticipated outcomes or dissemination plans for your research
- A current resume or CV

Selection Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on:
- The relevance of the proposed research to the AHC's collections.
- The clarity and feasibility of the research plan.
- The potential for the research to result in publications, presentations, or other forms of dissemination.
The selection committee, consisting of AHC staff, will review all applications. Applicants will be notified by email within a
month after the application deadline.
Award Details
Travel grant funds may be used for transportation, lodging, and food expenses related to the recipient's research stay at the AHC. Recipients are responsible for making their own travel and accommodation arrangements. Funds are disbursed as reimbursements upon completion of the research visit. Research visits must be completed by March 31, 2028 for the fall cycle, and August 31, 2028 for the spring cycle.
