  • Attainable Homeownership: Needs & Interest Survey

    Housing Needs and Homeownership Interest
  •

    Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. Your participation will help us better understand the housing needs of people across the Kootenays.

Built for the Future is an initiative led by Lhasa Developments Ltd., committed to creating attainable homeownership opportunities for people in our community.

Across the Kootenays, many middle-income households—including nurses, teachers, firefighters, tradespeople, small business owners, and self-employed professionals—are increasingly being priced out of homeownership. Many earn too much to qualify for subsidized housing, yet too little to afford today's housing market.

The Built for the Future Project is a proposed 20-home attainable homeownership* initiative in Salmo, B.C. We are gathering input from people across the Kootenays to better understand local housing needs and interest in this project.

The project is currently in the planning and approval stages, including discussions with the municipality and a non-profit partner. Every completed survey helps demonstrate community demand, strengthening discussions with project partners, funding organizations, and the municipality. Your participation helps us show that this project matters to the people it is intended to serve.

*Attainable homeownership means homes are offered below market value to help keep homeownership within reach of local communities.

Time required: Approximately 10-15 minutes. If you can't finish in one sitting, click Save at the end of the survey to receive a link and continue later.

    Privacy & Confidentiality

Your responses are confidential and will never be sold or shared with third parties.

Providing your contact information at the end of the survey is entirely optional and requires your separate consent. If you choose to provide your contact information, your survey responses will no longer be fully anonymous because they may be linked to you.

Survey findings will be shared with the municipality and our funding and non-profit partners only as anonymous, aggregated results.

Your personal information will be securely stored by Lhasa Developments Ltd. and will only be shared with the municipality or a non-profit partner if necessary to advance the project—and only with your separate consent.

Once the survey has closed and the analysis is complete, all survey responses and personal information will be securely deleted.

    Participation & Contact

This project is still in the planning and approval stages. Completing this survey or providing your contact information does not guarantee an opportunity to purchase a home or secure a place in any future selection process.

Important information and questions to check how our ownership model sounds to you.
  • Before this survey, had you already heard about the Built for the Future project?*
  • Built for The Future Project — Making Homeownership Attainable

  • The introduction gave you a more detailed explanation of our model, don't hesitate to refer back to it.

In order for you to answer the next questions, here are reminders on how this model allows you to enter the housing market at a lower price today.

When you sell your home in the future, the resale price is linked to the cost of living (inflation) rather than the traditional housing market. This model still allows you to build equity, it gives you a stable home but it also means your future resale profit will be limited.

The goal is to keep these homes affordable for future buyers while making homeownership possible for more people today.

  • Under This Model— Understanding the Costs

  • In addition to the affordable monthly mortgage payment you estimated using the calculator, you should also budget for the following estimated monthly homeownership costs:

    2-bedroom home: approximately $600/month
    3-bedroom home: approximately $650/month
These estimates include property taxes, school taxes, utilities, and strata fees.

*Please note that these costs are estimates and may be subject to change.

  • Which size of home do you need for your household?*
  • Could you comfortably afford these estimated monthly ownership costs in addition to your affordable monthly mortgage payment?*
  • How interested are you in purchasing a home at that total monthly cost?*
  • Owning Your Home — With a Bare-Land Strata

  • To meet land subdivision requirements for this project, the proposed homes in Salmo will use a bare-land strata ownership model.

With this type of ownership, you own both your home and the land it sits on, much like a traditional detached home.

The main difference is that certain shared infrastructure and common areas—such as the private road, sewage system, or shared green spaces—are owned and maintained collectively by all homeowners through a strata corporation.

  • Does this ownership model appeal to you?*
  • If this project is a good fit for you, would you be interested in living in Salmo, BC?*
  • Could this project help make your goal of becoming a homeowner a reality?*
  • Would you like to stay in touch with this project going forward?*
  • Section E — Contact & Consent

Last step — let us know how, if at all, you'd like us to follow up with you.
  • Format: (000) 000-0000.
