What happened when New York’s artists and writers traded skyscrapers for desert skies—and discovered that New Mexico was more than simply a picturesque place to escape? Over several decades, figures including Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, John Sloan, Willa Cather, Mabel Dodge Luhan, D. H. Lawrence--and many more--carried the friendships, feuds, and aesthetic grounding of New York’s modernist circles westward. In Taos, Santa Fe, and beyond, they found a landscape—and encountered Native and Hispanic cultures—that profoundly altered their work. This talk traces how a succession of individual pilgrimages gradually became something more surprising: a cohesive artistic movement that helped redefine American art and literature.
