    Join Ontario Tech University for an exciting new STEAM experience where creativity meets engineering.

    Designed for students in Grades 9-12, Code Your Canvas introduces participants to the world of electrical engineering, computer programming, and artificial intelligence through the creation of an interactive artwork. Students will transform a blank canvas into a personalized, light-up masterpiece by combining painting, circuitry, Arduino programming, and AI-powered design tools.

    Throughout the program, participants will learn how circuits work, build and wire their own electronic system, and use Arduino programming to control LEDs through multiple lighting modes. Students will also explore how engineers use artificial intelligence to brainstorm ideas, troubleshoot code, and enhance designs.

    Working alongside Ontario Tech engineering students, participants will develop technical skills while expressing their creativity through art and storytelling.

    The program culminates in an Innovation Day featuring an engineering guest speaker, networking lunch, AI-enhanced project development, and a science-fair-style Parent Showcase where students will demonstrate their completed interactive artworks and share their engineering journey.

    No prior experience with coding, electronics, painting, or AI is required.

    Students will take home their completed interactive LED canvas at the conclusion of the program.

    Monday, September 14 (In-person) – Imagine & Design with AI
    Introduction to engineering, Arduino, physical computing, and artificial intelligence. Students explore how engineers use AI in industry, brainstorm creative project ideas, sketch their canvas designs, and plan LED placement and lighting effects for their interactive artwork.


    Tuesday, September 15 (In-person) – Paint Your Canvas

    Students bring their ideas to life by painting their custom canvas artwork. Along the way, they are introduced to the fundamentals of electricity, circuits, LEDs, resistors, and how electronics can be integrated into creative designs.


    Monday, September 21 (In-person) – Build the Circuit
    Introduction to Arduino hardware, circuit assembly, and electronic prototyping. Students install and wire up to 10 LEDs, connect push-button controls, test circuits, and begin transforming their artwork into an interactive engineering project.


    Tuesday, September 22 (In-person) – Learn to Code
    Students learn Arduino programming fundamentals including variables, inputs, outputs, loops, and conditional statements. Participants program multiple lighting modes, test button-controlled interactions, and troubleshoot their projects with support from mentors.


    Saturday, September 26 (In-person) – Innovation Day & Parent Showcase (10:00 AM – 3:00 PM)
    Students explore how engineers use artificial intelligence to solve problems, enhance designs, and improve code. Participants use AI to create custom lighting effects and refine their projects, enjoy lunch with Ontario Tech engineering students and professionals, and hear from a guest speaker working in engineering. The day concludes with a science-fair-style Parent Showcase, where students demonstrate their completed interactive artworks, share their Artist-Engineer Statements, and present the design, coding, and engineering process behind their creations.

    • Medication

      Over the counter medication(s) will not be administered by program staff and should not be brought to campus. Program staff will confiscate any over the counter medication(s) from students, which will be held until check-out for the parent/guardian to retrieve.

      We recognize that participants may carry an inhaler and/or epi-pen. If this is the case please contact engineeringoutreach@ontariotechu.ca to complete the necessary forms, share pertinent information, and/or address any further questions. Epi-pens required for life-threatening allergies must remain in close proximity to the participant.
