Spirit Horse Exhibition – General Rules

1. NLEA Membership A current Newfoundland and Labrador Equestrian Association (NLEA) membership is required for all participants. This requirement is mandatory for insurance purposes. Proof of membership may be requested at registration.

2. Eligibility The Spirit Horse Exhibition is open to riders and horses of all breeds, disciplines, and experience levels unless otherwise stated in the class description.

3. Helmets ASTM/SEI-approved riding helmets are mandatory for all mounted classes and events, regardless of the rider's age. Helmets must be properly fitted and securely fastened whenever mounted on the show grounds.

4. Horse Welfare The welfare of the horse is the highest priority. Abuse, excessive use of whips or spurs, harsh handling, or any treatment deemed inhumane by show management will result in immediate disqualification and may require the participant to leave the grounds.

5. Good Sportsmanship The Spirit Horse Exhibition is founded on kindness, respect, encouragement, and community. All competitors, family members, volunteers, officials, and spectators are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times. Unsportsmanlike conduct or abusive behaviour toward judges, volunteers, or other participants will not be tolerated.

6. Judge's Decision The judge's decisions are final.

7. Attire Neat, clean, and safe attire is required. Western, English, or discipline-appropriate attire is acceptable unless otherwise specified. Closed-toe footwear is required whenever handling horses.

8. Class Entries Show management reserves the right to combine, divide, cancel, or modify classes based on the number of entries or weather conditions.

9. Warm-Up Arena Please ride courteously and safely in the warm-up area. Maintain appropriate spacing between horses and be respectful of riders of all experience levels. Reckless riding or unsafe behaviour may result in removal from the warm-up arena.

10. Dogs Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash and under control at all times. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.

11. Horse Health All horses attending the exhibition must be healthy and free from contagious or infectious diseases. Show management reserves the right to refuse entry to any horse showing signs of illness or posing a risk to other horses or participants.

12. Class Calls Competitors are responsible for listening for announcements and being ready when their class is called. Missed classes may not be held or rescheduled.

13. Liability Participation is entirely at the owner's and rider's risk. Stable Life Inc., the Spirit Horse Exhibition, property owners, volunteers, sponsors, judges, officials, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Equestrian Association assume no responsibility for accidents, injuries, illness, theft, loss, or damage to horses, people, vehicles, trailers, or personal property.

14. Photography & Media By participating in the Spirit Horse Exhibition, competitors consent to photographs and videos being taken during the event. Images may be used by Stable Life Inc. for promotional, educational, and social media purposes.

15. Show Management Show management reserves the right to interpret these rules, resolve situations not specifically covered, and make any decisions necessary to ensure the safety, fairness, and smooth operation of the event.

16. Have Fun! The Spirit Horse Exhibition is about celebrating horses, friendship, learning, community, and good horsemanship. Cheer one another on, encourage new riders, and enjoy a wonderful day with your horses!

In exchange for the acceptance of my or my child's candidacy by Stable Life, I assume all risk and hazards incidental to the conduct of the activities, and release, absolve and hold harmless Stable Life and all its respective officers, agents, and representatives from any and all liability for injuries to said child or myself arising out of traveling to, participating in, or returning from selected event sessions. In case of injury to said child or myself, I hereby waive all claims against Stable Life including all coaches and affiliates, all participants, sponsoring agencies, advertisers, and, if applicable, owners and lessors of premises used to conduct the event. There is a risk of being injured that is inherent in all sports activities, including equestrian. Some of these injuries include, but are not limited to, the risk of fractures, paralysis, or death.

Prettiest Mare- A fun in-hand halter class designed to showcase your mare's overall appearance, grooming, presentation, and partnership with her handler. Judges will consider cleanliness, condition, manners, and the overall impression the mare presents in the ring. This is a light-hearted class that celebrates the beauty and personality of every mare, regardless of breed or age.Open to all mares. Horses will be judged in-hand and are not ridden.Most Handsomest Gelding- A fun in-hand halter class designed to showcase your gelding's overall appearance, grooming, presentation, and partnership with the handler. Judges will consider cleanliness, condition, manners, and the overall impression the gelding presents in the ring. This light-hearted class is all about celebrating the charm, character, and good looks of every gelding, regardless of breed or age. Open to all geldings. Horses will be judged in-hand and are not ridden.Newfie Special class in memory of Andy- A special in-hand halter class held in loving memory of Andy, a beloved Clydesdale cross whose kind spirit touched many lives. This class celebrates horses with presence, heart, and character, qualities Andy was known for. Judges will consider overall presentation, grooming, condition, manners, and the partnership between horse and handler.Whether your horse is big or small, this class is about honouring the gentle nature and lasting legacy of a very special horse.Open to all breeds. Horses will be judged in-hand and are not ridden.NL Pony In Hand- An in-hand halter class celebrating the Newfoundland Pony, our province's most treasured heritage breed. This class highlights the breed's unique qualities, soundness, temperament, and overall presentation. Judges will consider grooming, condition, manners, and the partnership between horse and handler. This class is an opportunity to showcase the beauty, versatility, and enduring legacy of the Newfoundland Pony. Open to registered and unregistered Newfoundland Ponies. Horses will be judged in-hand and are not ridden.Colours Class- A fun in-hand halter class celebrating the beauty and diversity of horses with colourful and distinctive coat patterns. Whether your horse is Paint, Appaloosa, Pinto, Buckskin, Palomino, Roan, Dun, or any other colour or pattern, this class is all about showcasing their unique appearance. Judges will consider overall presentation, grooming, condition, manners, and the horse's eye-catching colour and markings. Open to horses and ponies of all breeds with distinctive coat colours or patterns. Horses will be judged in-hand and are not ridden.Musical Freestyle Walk Jog- Show off your creativity in this crowd-favourite class! Design a freestyle performance set to music that highlights the partnership between you and your horse. Entries may be performed at liberty, in-hand, or ridden, with movements primarily at the walk and jog/trot. Costumes, props, and creative choreography are encouraged but optional.Judging will be based on creativity, harmony between horse and handler/rider, use of music, presentation, and overall entertainment value rather than technical difficulty.Open to all horses and ponies. Performances may be at liberty, in-hand, or ridden. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Open Musical Freestyle- Express your creativity and showcase the unique partnership between you and your horse in this open freestyle class. Riders will be led by a handler while demonstrating basic control, confidence, and horsemanship at the walk. The focus is on safety, participation, and having fun in the ring. Judging will be based on the rider's confidence, position, smile, and overall partnership between the horse, rider, and leader. Open to young riders on a horse or pony led by a responsible handler. This is a walk-only class.Leadline Parents-It's the parents' turn! This light-hearted class gives moms, dads, grandparents, and other adult family members a chance to experience the fun of being led around the ring. Riders will be led by a handler at the walk while enjoying the experience and making lasting memories. Judging will be based on enthusiasm, sportsmanship, smiles, and overall enjoyment rather than riding ability. Laughter is highly encouraged! Open to adult family members. Horses or ponies will be led by a responsible handler. This is a walk-only fun class.Spirit Horse Trail In Hand- Navigate a fun and challenging trail course designed to showcase the trust, communication, and partnership between horse and handler. Obstacles may include gates, bridges, poles, backing, side-passing, mailbox, or other natural and ranch-style challenges. Horses will be judged on willingness, calmness, accuracy, and the handler's horsemanship rather than speed. This class celebrates the Spirit Horse philosophy of building confidence, connection, and teamwork through positive communication. Open to all horses and ponies. Horses will be shown in-hand. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Walk Trot/Jog Trail Youth- A trail class designed for youth riders to showcase their horsemanship, confidence, and partnership with their horse while navigating a series of obstacles. Obstacles may include gates, bridges, poles, backing, side-passing, mailbox, or other natural and ranch-style challenges. The course is completed at the walk and jog/trot, with judging based on accuracy, willingness, smoothness, horsemanship, and the horse's calm and confident attitude rather than speed. Open to youth riders of all experience levels. This is a walk/jog class. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Walk Trot/Jog Trail Adult- A trail class designed for adult riders to demonstrate confidence, communication, and partnership with their horse while navigating a series of obstacles. Obstacles may include gates, bridges, poles, backing, side-passing, mailbox, or other natural and ranch-style challenges. The course is completed at the walk and jog/trot, with judging based on accuracy, willingness, smoothness, horsemanship, and the horse's calm and confident attitude rather than speed. Open to adult riders of all experience levels. This is a walk/jog class. Judging based on accuracy, willingness, smoothness, horsemanship, and the horse's calm and responsive attitude rather than speed. Open to all horses, ponies, and riders. A little mare attitude is expected—and encouraged! Open to mares only. This is a ridden class. Horses will be shown at the walk, jog/trot, and lope/canter as directed by the judge. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Distinguished Gentleman's Class- Celebrate the dependable, kind-hearted nature of the gelding in this fun ridden class. Designed to showcase the horse that is quiet, willing, well-mannered, and a pleasure to ride, this class highlights the qualities that make geldings such trusted partners. Judges will evaluate manners, responsiveness, relaxation, overall presentation, and the partnership between horse and rider. This class is all about recognizing the "distinguished gentleman"—calm, courteous, and enjoyable to ride. Open to geldings only. This is a ridden class. Horses will be shown at the walk, jog/trot, and lope/canter as directed by the judge. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Walk Trot/Jog Pole Bending- A fun speed and agility class that tests the communication and partnership between horse and rider. Competitors will weave through a line of poles at the walk and jog/trot, aiming for a smooth, accurate, and efficient pattern. A timed event with penalties for missed poles or an incorrect pattern will apply. Judging is based on completing the correct pattern with accuracy, control, and steady horsemanship. Open to all horses and riders. This is a walk/jog class. Loping or cantering in this class will result in a time penalty. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Open Pole Bending-A fast-paced speed event that challenges the agility, responsiveness, and athleticism of both horse and rider. Competitors will weave through a line of poles as quickly and accurately as possible before returning through the pattern to the finish line. The fastest clean run wins, with time penalties applied for knocked-over or missed poles and off-course patterns.This class rewards speed, precision, and excellent horsemanship.Open to all horses and riders. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Walk Trot/Jog Barrels- A fun speed event that emphasizes control, accuracy, and partnership between horse and rider. Competitors will complete the traditional cloverleaf barrel pattern at the walk and jog/trot. The fastest clean run wins, with time penalties applied for knocked-over barrels or off-course patterns.This class encourages confidence and horsemanship while providing a fun introduction to barrel racing without the speed of a lope.Open to all horses and riders. This is a walk/jog class. Loping or cantering will result in a time penalty. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Open Barrels- A classic speed event that showcases the athleticism, agility, and partnership between horse and rider. Competitors will complete the traditional cloverleaf barrel pattern as quickly and accurately as possible. The fastest clean run wins, with time penalties applied for knocked-over barrels or off-course patterns.This class rewards speed, precision, and excellent horsemanship while maintaining the safety and welfare of the horse. Open to all horses and riders. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Slow poke race- Can you go the slowest without stopping? In this fun and challenging class, horse and rider will travel from the start line to the finish line at the slowest possible pace. The objective is to take the longest time while maintaining forward motion. Horses that stop moving forward, back up, step outside the course, or receive excessive cues may be eliminated.This class is a true test of patience, balance, control, and communication between horse and rider.Open to all horses and riders. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Costume Class- Let your imagination shine in this fun and creative class! Horses and riders (or handlers) are encouraged to dress up in costumes of their choice. Whether funny, spooky, historical, magical, or completely original, creativity is the goal. Costumes may be shown ridden or in-hand. Judging will be based on creativity, originality, overall presentation, effort, and the partnership between horse and handler/rider. Most importantly, costumes should be safe, comfortable, and not interfere with the horse's welfare. Open to all horses and ponies. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Pairs Walk Jog- Teamwork takes center stage in this fun class for two horse-and-rider (or horse-and-handler) teams. Pairs will perform a simple pattern or rail work together, demonstrating coordination, communication, and partnership. Teams will be judged on how well they work together, their accuracy, presentation, and overall harmony throughout the class.Matching outfits, coordinated tack are encouraged but not required! Open to two-horse teams. Entries may be ridden or in-hand, as specified by show management. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Walk Jog/Trot Scurry- A timed event where horse-and-rider teams race over a course of three small jumps, turn at the end of the arena, and return over the same three jumps to the finish line. The fastest clean round wins. Time penalties may be applied for knockdowns, refusals, or going off course.This class is designed to be fun while showcasing speed, confidence, and safe jumping skills. Riders may only walk or Jog/Trot. Open to all horses and riders capable of safely jumping the course. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Open Scurry- A timed event where horse-and-rider teams race over a course of three small jumps, turn at the end of the arena, and return over the same three jumps to the finish line. The fastest clean round wins. Time penalties may be applied for knockdowns, refusals, or going off course. This class is designed to be fun while showcasing speed, confidence, and safe jumping skills. Open to all horses and riders capable of safely jumping the course. Safety and good horsemanship are expected at all times.Hobby horse class-No real horse? No problem! Grab your favourite hobby horse and join the fun in this energetic class. Participants will complete a simple course that may include walking, trotting, cantering, small jumps, weaving through poles, or other fun obstacles. Creativity, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship are encouraged!Judging will be based on effort, enthusiasm, creativity, and completion of the course. This class is all about having fun and bringing out your inner equestrian. Open to all ages. Participants must provide their own hobby horse.
