Kratom in the Community: Use, Risks, Emerging Kratom Use Disorder (KUD), and Prevention-Focused Marketing Awareness
Kratom products are increasingly visible in convenience stores, smoke shops, online marketplaces, and communities across the country. Often promoted as natural, herbal, or wellness-oriented, these products may be used for pain, energy, mood, anxiety, opioid withdrawal, or recreation. However, many consumers—and even helping professionals—may be unfamiliar with the potential for tolerance, dependence, withdrawal, polysubstance complications, and emerging Kratom Use Disorder.
This online lunch-and-learn will provide addiction counselors, prevention professionals, peer recovery specialists, and other behavioral health professionals with a practical overview of kratom and its growing relevance to substance use prevention and treatment.
Participants will learn how kratom affects the body, how patterns of casual use may progress to dependence, and what signs may indicate that an individual is experiencing impaired control, cravings, withdrawal, or continued use despite negative consequences.
The training will also examine the rapidly changing kratom marketplace, including powders, capsules, teas, extracts, enhanced products, and concentrated 7-OH products. Special attention will be given to the ways packaging and marketing claims—such as “natural,” “not an opioid,” “detox,” “energy,” and “wellness”—can influence public perceptions, normalize use, minimize risk, and delay help-seeking.
Attendees will leave with practical screening questions, counseling considerations, prevention strategies, and referral guidance that can be incorporated into intake, assessment, education, and multidisciplinary care.
Topics will include:
- What kratom is and how it works
- Mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, and dose-dependent effects
- Tolerance, dependence, withdrawal, and emerging Kratom Use Disorder
- Counseling-relevant warning signs and behavioral indicators
- Risks associated with extracts, enhanced products, and polysubstance use
- Marketing and packaging practices that shape consumer beliefs
- Screening questions and team-based response strategies
- Treatment considerations, early intervention, and referral
