  • Background

    These scholarships recognise sporting talent within the Bay of Plenty and are designed to assist high-achieving young athletes, coaches and teams with travel support for regional, national, and international competitions.

    Eligibility

    Any young athlete, coach, official or team competing to represent their club, sub-region or the Bay of Plenty region aged 15–23 at the time of the event and residing within the Bay of Plenty regional boundaries in the current year, 2026.

    Any coach working with athletes aged 15-23 residing within the Bay of Plenty regional boundaries in the current year, 2026.

    Eligible costs must be for regional/national or international events during the period  12 October 2026 – 26 April 2027.

    Individual

    · Value: Up to $750

    · Must be residing permanently in the Bay of Plenty region; evidence may be requested.

    · The geographical barrier must be across sub-regional or regional boundaries. For example, You live in Whākatane, and the competition is in Tauranga.

    · Must have endorsement through their Regional or National Sporting Organisation if entering a representative competition; evidence required

    · Coaches must be working with athletes who reside in the Bay of Plenty region, with at least 80% of any single team based in the region.

    Team

    · Value: Up to $1250

    · 80% of team members (participants) must be residing permanently in the Bay of Plenty region; evidence may be requested

    · The geographical barrier must be across sub-regional or regional boundaries. For example...The team lives in Whākatane, and the competition is in Tauranga or Hamilton.

    · Must have endorsement through their Regional or National Sporting Organisation if entering a representative competition; evidence required.

    Requirements

    · The scholarship will be conditional on the athlete/s or coach meeting the above eligibility criteria.

    · Scholarships must be for a regional, national or international sporting competition or competitions (not local).

    · Eligible expenses must be directly related to attending the approved event.

    · Applications must be submitted before the event takes place. Retrospective funding for events that have already occurred will not be considered.

    · Details of travel schedule to be provided, as well as quotes for service and accommodation where applicable

    · Successful applicants may be asked to assist Sport Bay of Plenty and/or BayTrust with promotional / role model or similar opportunities.

    · Applicants will be expected to provide post-event reflection/results, which may be used for media purposes.

    A supporting statement from a coach, coach developer, club official, official developer from a National/Regional Sporting Organisation, Club or Organisation is required to confirm the applicant’s level of competition and suitability for this scholarship. This helps ensure alignment with the fund’s purpose and supports the assessment process.
