    Travel Fellowship Application Form

    Submit your application for a Travel Fellowship to attend the World Conference of Science Journalists 2027 in London.

  • WCSJ2027 Travel Fellowships are intended to support applicants who would otherwise be unable to attend the conference because of limited access to funding, while helping ensure broad international participation and representation.

    WCSJ2027 Travel Fellowships provide financial support for air/rail/coach/bus travel, visa applications, limited local transport at the conference location, and up to six nights of accommodation. The fellowship also includes full conference registration, refreshments, lunches and reception catering as part of the conference programme. Travel Fellowships do not include per diem payments.

  • The conference language is English, so a certain level of proficiency is required to benefit fully from the conference. Please rate your level of proficiency in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

  • The following question is optional. Some of the information you may choose to provide may be considered sensitive personal information under applicable data protection law. If you choose to answer, you explicitly consent to WCSJ2027 processing this information for the purposes of the Travel Fellowship selection process, including determining whether you identify with one or more underrepresented groups in accordance with the published selection criteria. Reviewers will receive only a derived score indicating whether the relevant criterion has been met and will not have access to the category or categories you select. Following the completion of the Fellowship process, anonymised information may also be used for statistical analysis and reporting relating to the WCSJ2027 Travel Fellowship programme.

  • OPEN ACCESS, TRANSLATION AND OTHER RULES TO UPLOAD WORK

    We ask for at least three examples of your work, whether written, video, audio or other. The work must have been published within the last two years. Unpublished work will not be accepted, except from students.

    Students are encouraged to submit published work, such as pieces from a university newspaper, radio station or blog. If you are a student and do not have enough published work, you may submit supervised long-form coursework, together with a short statement from the teacher who supervised the work confirming this.

    We prefer links to a website or platform (URL), provided they are accessible to all readers/viewers. If not, please ensure you make them available via a code, private folder, PDF (for written content) or MP3/MP4 (for audio/video), or another format that is suitable for your piece and that the reviewers can easily open.

    If your examples are not in English, please also provide a translation (you can use an AI tool as long as it remains faithful to the original).

    If you are providing audio or video content in a language other than English, please provide either a translated transcript, a URL, or a video/audio file with English subtitles (you can use an AI tool as long as it remains faithful to the original).

    For any translation or transcript, you must always include the original piece, as we will have multilingual reviewers.

  • The WCSJ2027 Travel Fellowship supports applicants who are committed to the principles of accurate, fair and transparent science communication and journalism. Applicants are expected to be familiar with and support the WFSJ Guiding Principles for Journalists Covering Science. These principles include accuracy, fairness, transparency, editorial independence, the disclosure of conflicts of interest, and proper attribution of sources, as applicable to each applicant's professional practice.

  • Please upload a supporting letter from your employer, the head of your educational department, an editor you regularly work with (if you are a freelance), or the association you are a member of (e.g. science journalism, journalism, or science communication).

    The letter should state how this conference would help you to improve professionally and how your expertise could contribute to the overall community. 

    Note: Supporting letters may contain the name, role and professional contact details of the person providing the letter. Applicants should ensure that the person providing the supporting letter is aware that it will be submitted to WCSJ2027 and has been directed to the WCSJ2027 Travel Fellowship Privacy Notice.
