47 years ago, this was the very first class taught at Temari, Center for Asian-Pacific Arts (our former name). Then, it was called, “New Wave Kimono”, to honor the innovative designer, Issey Miyake.
Now, we promote your discovery of Japan’s indigenous garment from its very basic dyeing , weaving and construction methods to its surface decoration colorings and to its infinite possibilities as just—fabric.
Part 1: 8/15 Saturday, 9-11am
THE BASICS
Fiber Identification Methods, Kimono Origin and its Cultural Context, Tactile experience with dyed, woven printed, pieced kimono. Katazome
HOMEWORK:
Read up on Fiber I.D. Burn tests, basic definitions of aizome, orizome, saki-ori, kasuri, katazome, Keisuke Serizawa, Yoshiko Wada and her Slow Fiber Studio, and the 45R shops.
THE CHALLENGE:
You will have about 3 weeks to present YOUR adaptations of kimono to a group of veteran makers and sellers of things made from kimono. This is optional.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
An invitation to Sell your handmade creations in one of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii’s(JCCH) Collectibles Fair, at no charge.
What to bring to 8/15 class:
Fiber ID tools: metal pan, small lighter and candle, tweezers.
MCC will offer for sale a curated collection of kimono and related pieces.
Part 2: 9/19 Saturday, 9-11 am
SHOW & TELL:
Share your creations. Learn from each other, and recieve feedback from veteran makers Diane Nonaka and Leah Sekiguchi and the JCCH Gift Shop manager, Ally Kuranishi.
