The Merit of Making Buddha Images
一、根本聖教依據
《大乘造像功德經》
唐·于闐三藏 提雲般若 譯
佛陀上升忉利天，為母說法。優填王因思慕如來，遂以栴檀恭造佛陀聖像，是為造像之始。此經為造像一事之根本依據。
The Mahāyāna Sūtra on the Merit of Making Images (Tang, tr. Devaprajña). While the Buddha was in the Trāyastriṃśa heaven teaching his mother, King Udayana, out of longing for the Teacher, commissioned the first image in sandalwood. This is the standard scriptural warrant for image-making.
二、十一種功德
《佛說造立形像福報經》
1️⃣ 世世眼目清明
Clear and bright vision in all lives
2️⃣ 所生之處無有惡人
Never born among evil company
3️⃣ 常生尊貴之家
Born into a noble family
4️⃣ 身相端嚴，如紫磨金色
A fine body, the colour of refined gold
5️⃣ 珍寶豐足
Abundance of resources
6️⃣ 生賢善之家
Born to virtuous parents
7️⃣ 得為國王
Attain sovereignty
8️⃣ 得作轉輪聖王
Attain the state of a cakravartin
9️⃣ 得生梵天，壽命一劫
Rebirth in the Brahmā heaven
🔟 不墮惡道
Never fall into the lower realms
1️⃣1️⃣ 後世常能敬重三寶
In future lives, unfailing reverence for the Three Jewels
三、傳統釋義
此十一種果報，須以菩提心攝持、以迴向印定，方得成就；否則所感者不過人天有漏福報而已。
These fruits ripen truly only when joined to bodhicitta and sealed with dedication (迴向 · pariṇāmanā). Otherwise they remain merely worldly merit (有漏福報).
四、附參
《地藏菩薩本願經·見聞利益品》亦廣說造像、修像之功德。若涉及超度先亡，此品尤為適用之依據。
The Kṣitigarbha Sūtra, "Benefits of Seeing and Hearing", also treats the merit of commissioning and repairing images — useful where the dedication is for the deceased.
