• Systems Mapping in the Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait

  • Thank you for taking part in the Systems Mapping project for the Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. We're focusing on biosecurity - to better understand the ways we are currently working to help stop the spread of pests, diseases and weeds so we can strengthen our efforts together.

Some important things about this work:

    • This is a collective initiative and the Systems Map developed through this process will be a shared resource that all stakeholders can use.
    • The Systems Map is not addressing a specific biosecurity risk or concern. This process is taking a holistic, broad picture view of biosecurity in the region.
    • The information collected for the Systems Map will be publicly available and a team of (human) verifiers will check all information before it is made public to omit private names/contact details.
    • Sensitive or confidential information should not be shared for the Systems Map. Names and contact details may be recorded so that the project team can clarify any collected information as needed, however, these details will not be added to the map.
    • The Systems Mapping process is ‘opt-in’ and entirely voluntary, anyone who impacts or is impacted by biosecurity in the region can contribute, but there is no obligation to do so.
    • Systems mapping is a complex process that is emergent and will develop over time.

You're invited for share your knowledge of the system, to help build the picture of how different people and organisations are working together.

    REGION:

The area we are looking to understand better is North of Mossman (inclusive of Mossman), spanning East coast to West coast and including all Torres Strait islands.

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE MAP:

You can fill this out on your own, or share your thoughts in a conversation with one of our hosts who will record your information. You're welcome to skip questions if they're not relevant, or stop at any time.

When you have finished, simply click the button 'SUBMIT ENTRY'. The key contact (nominated in the following pages) will receive an email with links to view the submission or edit the details you have entered.

    ABOUT THE PROJECT:

Biosecurity Queensland has initiated the project, co-designing the systems map with stakeholders and community in the region.

Independent engagement specialists MosaicLab are coordinating the mapping process.

Please contact BQSystemsMapping@dpi.qld.gov.au for more information about the project.

  • Part A - YOUR CONSENT

Thank you for taking part in this Systems Mapping project. Before you contribute, we want you to understand exactly what you're agreeing to.

By taking part in the mapping process, you're telling us:

    • You're comfortable with us recording what you share in this conversation, and using it to build the Systems Map.
    • You're comfortable with what you share being seen by others, because this map will be shared and used publicly beyond this session.
    • You're only sharing information that's yours to share. Please don't share information told to you privately or in confidence by someone else, or cultural knowledge that belongs to a community rather than to you personally, unless you have permission to share it.
    • You’re comfortable with us storing sensitive information on Queensland Government servers, and public information on Google Sheets and Kumu.io.

If you identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or you're sharing information about Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities, culture or Country:

    • Some knowledge is collectively owned by a community, family or Nation, not by one person. Please only share knowledge you have the authority to share, and let us know if something you contribute needs specific permission or attribution.
    • You don't have to share anything you consider sacred, sensitive or not yours to share.

By contributing to the Systems Map, you/your organisation can:

    • Choose whether your name is attached to what you share, or whether it stays confidential.
    • Ask for a support person to be with you, or ask a MosaicLab facilitator for support at any time.
    • Stop or withdraw your contribution at any time.

If you have questions before you begin, contact BQSystemsMapping@dpi.qld.gov.au

  • Do you consent to the information you share being recorded in this form?*
  • Please note: all information provided will be reviewed and confirmed before being published on the Systems Map.

  • Part A (cont'd) - ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION (Entry details)

Please share the names and details about this entry - this is for project team use only and won't be added to the Systems Map.

  • Part B - UNDERSTANDING WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE SYSTEM

  • To build our systems map, we'll be gathering information on three things: what's happening, who's involved, and how they're connected.

We'll start with the big picture - what's happening in your organisation, industry, Country or community.

Describe the ways people and organisations are using, caring for or managing the land, plants, animals and waterways in your area.

  • Q2. Location - where exactly is this happening?*
  • Q4. Which activities are helping to manage these challenges in this area? (tick all that apply)
  • Part C - SPECIFIC CHALLENGES IN THIS AREA

Now that we have discussed the high level aspects of biosecurity we want to get into the specifics that will help us refine the systems map.
  • In this section, we're keen to understand what pests and diseases you are seeing affect the land, water and skies of Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait.

Include as much information as you can about this pest/disease in the description box, please add the location and the impact, as well as any particular activities helping with management.

You can add multiple pests/diseases by clicking the 'Add New' button.

Please note: The Systems Map is not a live monitoring or verification system.

If you suspect you've found a high-priority pest or disease, don't wait for this map to be published or updated - report it immediately to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.

  • Q6. Are there any specific challenges/risks you've noticed in this area?
  • Part D - WHO IS WORKING ON THIS?

To build a really useful systems map, we need to know how different parts of the system are working together.
  • In this section, we're keen to understand who is working together on the challenges you described above.

Here we're asking you to add any organisations/people working with other groups/individuals on this challenge. Next, briefly describe how they work together then use the the dropdown to show the strength of this relationship.

Please include your organisation in at least one connection below.

Use the checkboxes to show how you/they are connected from left to right (the 'Org/Person' to 'who they work with'). Select all that apply from the formal/governance connections and the relational and cultural connections.

Add details about how they're addressing the challenge you described above in the 'any other details' box.

Please include any relevant organisations you are connected with. You can add multiple people/organisations by clicking the 'Add New Connection' button.

  • Q7. People Connections*
  • Part E - RESOURCES, PROGRAMS or INFRASTRUCTURE

  • To help us build the layers and connections between different parts of the system, we're keen to know if any other resources, infrastructure or programs are used in working on the challenges you've described.

You can add more than one by clicking the 'add another resource' button.

  • Q10. Resources, programs and infrastructure:
  • Part F - IMAGES, FILES or LINKS

  • Our goal is to share the story of biosecurity, including images or recordings that show (not just tell) what is happening within the region.

Use this section to upload any photos, videos, files or links that document the risks (e.g. pest or disease) or the response (e.g. prevention program etc).

NOTE: by uploading files/content you are granting permission for us to include this content in the public Systems Map. Please only share files you have permission or authority to share. Any images/video that feature people will require their consent.

  • Q15. Are there any other people/organisations you think should be included in the map? (Optional)
  • NOTE: The Project Team may reach out to invite these people/organisations to contribute. These details won't be added to the Systems Map without permission.

  • You're about to share your contribution with our project team.
