We are working on the accessibility of the Microsoft MakeCode editor for micro:bit.
We want to hear from:
- young learners (8+ years old) who have a disability that impacts their use of a computer
- educators, parents or carers of students with these accessibility needs, or specialists who support them
At this stage we want to learn about the experiences of two groups of users:
1) those with visual impairments, who may use screen readers, refreshable braille displays, magnifiers, or other software adaptation.
2) those with fine motor challenges, for whom using a standard computer mouse or trackpad is difficult. This includes those who use assistive technology such as switches, eye gaze or voice control, as well as those who use keyboard access without a mouse or trackpad.
If this is not you but you would be happy to help with other research join the Micro:bit Educational Foundation research community to hear about other research we are carrying out.
Young learners
We want to understand your experience using the MakeCode editor.
We would like you to have tried using the MakeCode editor and some of the resources found at Microsoft Makecode accessibility support.
If you have not tried using both the MakeCode editor and some of the accessibility support resources since the MakeCode release on 13th July 2026 you will be directed to try them out during the survey.
Educators, parents or carers
Please only complete the survey if you have experience using or trying to use block based coding in the MakeCode editor, and have used some of resources at Microsoft MakeCode accessibility support, with learners (8+ years old) with fine motor or visual impairments, since the MakeCode release on 13th July 2026
If using an offline version of MakeCode, ensure you have the most recent version - version 9 or above, updated 13th July 2026. You can check the version number using MakeCode Settings/ About .
The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
There are no right or wrong answers; we are seeking your honest opinions.
Young learners completing the survey for themselves will need to ask their parent or legal guardian to give consent for them to take part.
