    Entry Agreements:

    • Upon entering the annual United States Open Music Competition, contestants and their families agree to assign USOMC the rights to use any photographs, video recordings, or interiviews of any USOMC event without compensation.
      ALL ENTRY FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. This rule has been established and is not negotiable.
    • USOMC reserves the right to combine and/or cancel events for any reason.

    • There are Six levels - four categories each - a total of 24 Events. All contestants perform the same music in each event.
    • The 24 pieces are pre-selected. Contestants may enter numerous events as they choose. Please review P.3-P.5 of the syllabus before making your selection.

    *Note: NO REPEATS are allowed, unless clearly instructed to do so.

    For all baroque music; guidelines will be given to judges concerning "commonly known" baroque performance practices regardning ornaments, phrasing, dynamics and articulations not marked as such, but used by Bach, Scarlatti, Handel, and other Baroque composers and musicians as appropriate styles for that period. Judges will not penalize the contestants for such Baroque articulations.

    • There are five levels in this category. Please Review P.3-P.5 before making your selection.
    • Contestants may choose to enter one or more levels in Category 2.

    *Note: (a) NO REPEATS are allowed, unless clearly instructed to do so. (b) For longer pieces, follow "CUT" instructions carefully; It is important not to make any mistakes with the "CUTS"

     

  • Category 4: The Treasury of Romantic Composers

    • There are six levels in this Category. Please review P.3-P.5 before making your selection.
    • Contestants may choose to enter one or more levels in Category 4.

  • Category 5: The Treasury of 20th-21st Century Composers

    • There are six levels in this Category. Please review P.3-P.5 before making your selection.

  • Category 6: Open Duet Baroque 

    • There are three levels in this Category. Contestants may choose to enter one or more levels.
    • This category does not require memorization. However, if the First Place Winners do not memorize their piece during the Prizewinners' Concert, they will not be considered for the Outstanding Gold Medalist Awards.

  • Category 9 Open Duet Contemporary: Please select the level(s) you choose to participate in.

  • Category 10: Showcase Piano Ensemble 

    • There are three levels to this category.
    • One or Two Piano (Duet or Duo), Four to Eight Hands.
    • There are three levels of different age groups in this Category for two-four performers.
    • This category does not require memorization. However, if the piece is not memorized during the Gold Medalists' Concert, the contestants will not be eligiable to win the Outstanding Gold Medalists Award.
    • Contestants must upload a PDF file of their complete score (or the first five pages).
    • A proof of age file must be uploaded on the first page of the registration form.

     Junior: For Ages 12 and Under (For ALL Contestants)

    • Maximum time for the Competition: 6 Minutes

    Intermediate: For age 13-15 (For one contestant, the other contestants may be younger)

    • Maximum time for the Competition: 8 Minutes

    Senior: For Ages 16 and up (for one contestant, other contestants may be of any age)

    • Maximum time for the Competition: 10 Minutes

  • Category 11: Showcase Piano Solo 

    • There are five different age groups in this category.
    • Contestants must select two or two sets of original and contrasting pieces from different musical periods, ANY STANDARD REPERTOIRE will be acceptable such as one or more movement(s) from a Sonata, a suite or a set of Theme & Variations.
    • No simplified music is allowed. Contestants who have won first place at the USOMC in the past are not allowed to enter again using the same repertoire, If they do, they will be automatically disqualified to win a prize.
    • Contestants must upload a PDF of their complete music scores (or the first 5 pages of each piece).
    • Contestants must bring at least 3 copies of their music (one must be purchased) for the judges during the competition and mark the first bar of each line. Without proper music, contestants will be disqualified.
    • A proof of age file must be uploaded on the first page of the registration form.

    Preparatory: Ages 7 and Under

    • Maximum time for the competition: 5 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners' Concert: 3 minutes

    Elementary: Ages 8-9 

    • Maximum time for the competition: 6 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners's Concert: 4 minutes

    Junior: Ages 10-11

    • Maximum time for the competition: 7 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners' Concert: 5 minutes

    Intermediate: Ages 12-13

    • Maximum time for the competition: 9 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners' Concert: 6 minutes

    Senior: Ages 14-15

    • Maximum time for the competition: 13 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners' Concert: 7 minutes

    Advanced: Ages 15 and above

    • Maximum time for the competition: 13 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners' Concert: 7 minutes

  • Category 12: Showcase Piano Solo for Amateur Pianists

    • Ages 21 and Above
    • This event is open to pianists who pursue music as a hobby and have neither earned a professional degree in music, not make performing or teaching piano their main source of income.
    • Contestants may choose music from any standard repertoire, except music selected for the Solo and Treasury Events, Categories 1-5). 
    • Performance from memory is required.
    • Contestants must bring at least 3 copies of their music (one must be purchased) for the judges during the competition and mark the first bar of each line. Without proper music, contestants will be disqualified.
    • A proof of age file must be uploaded on the first page of the registration form.
    • Maximum time for the competition: 10 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners' Concert: 5 minutes

  • Category 13: Showcase Special Solo

    • This event is for those with special needs.
    • All contestants with special needs are welcome to enter this event with no age limits.
    • They may choose music from any standard repertoire, performance from memory is required.
    • Contestants must bring at least 3 copies of their music (one must be purchased) for the judges during the competition and mark the first bar of each line. Without proper music, contestants will be disqualified.
    • Maximum time for the competition and Prizewinners' Concert: 5 minutes

  • Category 14: Showcase Piano Concerto - One Movement

    • There are four different age groups in this category
    • Contestants who have won first place at the USOMC in the past are not allowed to enter again using the same movement of the Concerto.
    • Contestants are required to bring their own accompanist for the competition, teachers or parents are not allowed to accompany thier students.
    • Contestants must bring at least 3 copies of their music (one must be purchased) for the judges during the competition and mark the first bar of each line. Without proper music, contestants will be disqualified.
    • A proof of age file must be uploaded on the first page of the registration form.

    Elementary: Ages 9 and under

    • Maximum time for the competition: 7 minutes

    Junior: Ages 10-12

    • Maximum time for the competition: 9 minutes

    Intermediate: Ages 13-15

    • Maximum time for the competition: 12 minutes

    Senior: Ages 16 and above

    • Maximum time for the competition: 12 minutes

  • Category 15: Complete Piano Concerto

    • Any complete concerto from the standard piano repertoire may be used.
    • Contestants who have won first place in this event at the USOMC in the past, are not allowed to enter again using the same concerto. Failure to complete will result in automatic disqualification for the first prize.
    • Performance of the entire concerto must be from memory.
    • Please accurately time your performance.
    • The complete Concerto may be longer than 30 minutes, but each contestant is given a maximum time of 25 minutes. The judges may hear portions of the entire Concerto as they see fit.
    • Contestants must bring at least 3 copies of their music (one must be purchased) for the judges during the competition and mark the first bar of each line. Without proper music, contestants will be disqualified.
    • A proof of age file must be uploaded on the first page of the registration form.

  • Category 16: Showcase Sight-Reading Solo

    • There are six different age groups in this category.
    • All contestants will play "by sight" one short piece appropriate for their age level.
    • Level Preparatory and Elementary will have five minutes to look over the music (without a piano) before their turn to play.
    • Level Junior through Senior will have three minutes to look over the music (without a piano)
    • Each contestant may only enter once in the Solo Event.

  • Category 17: Showcase Sight-Reading Duet

    • There are three different age groups in this group
    • All contestants will play "by sight" together one short piece appropriate for their age levels.
    • All contestants will have five minutes to look over the music (without a piano) before their turn to play.
    • Contestants may enter only once with partner(s) from the proper age groups. The older partner's age will determine the age group.
  • Category 17 Showcase Sight-Reading Duet: Please select the level you choose to participate in.

  • Category 18: Showcase Own Composition

    • There are two levels in this category
    • Contestants will perform an original solo piano composition of their own.
    • Contestants will judge based on their originality and musicality as a composer and performer.
    • The composition must be from memory.
    • All contestants must email a PDF of their finished composition to info@usomc.org by January 10th, 2027. If the composition isn't completed in time, contestants must send an email to request an extension up until January 15th, 2027 (Final and last deadline). Failure to complete will result in disqualification.
    • Contestants must bring at least 3 copies of their score for the judges.
    • A proof of age file must be uploaded on the first page of the registration form.

    Intermediate: Ages 14 and under

    • Maximum time for the Competition: 4 minutes

    Senior: Ages 15 and over

    • Maximum time for the Competition: 5 minutes

  • Category 19: Preparatory Instrumental Pedagogy

    • This event is for instrumental students in ages 8 and under.
    • Contestants can choose any music that is under 2 minutes, including simplified versions of the music.
    • Performance will be without an accompaniment. Memorization is required.
    • Contestants must bring 3 copies of their music for the judges during the competition.
    • A proof of age file must be uploaded on the first page of the registration form.

  • Category 20: Showcase Instrumental Solo

    • There are four different age groups in this category.
    • Contestants must select two original and contrasting piece (with or withour piano accompaniment) from different musical periods. ANY STANDARD REPERTOIRE will be acceptable, such as one or more movements from a Sonata, Concerto, Suite, or Theme & Variation. No simplified music is allowed. Performance must be from memory.
    • Teachers or Parents are not allowed to accompany their own student.
    • Contestants must upload a PDF file of their repertoire or the first five pages.
    • Contestants must bring at least 3 copies of their music (one must be purchased) for the judges during the competition and mark the first bar of each line. Without proper music, contestants will be disqualified.

    Elementary: Ages 7-9

    • Maximum time for the competition: 5 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners' Concert: 3 minutes

    Junior: Ages 10-12

    • Maximum time for the competition: 7 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners' Concert: 4 minutes

    Intermediate: Ages 13-15

    • Maximum time for the competition: 8 minutes
    • Maximum time for the Prizewinners' Concert: 5 minutes

    Senior: Ages 16 and above

    • There are two different age groups in this category.
    • The instrumental Sonatas include 2 performers (any combination of instruments), with or without a piano part. All contestants will be judged. If a piano part is required, the pianist will be judged as a part of the duet.
    • Contestants must upload a full PDF file or the first five pages of their score.
    • Contestants must bring at least 3 copies of their music (one must be purchased) for the judges during the competition and mark the first bar of each line. Without proper music, contestants will be disqualified.

    • There are two different age groups in this category.
    • The instrumental ensemble may include from three to eight performers, any combination of instruments, with/without a piano part.
