PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This year’s Folklife Area inside the Greensboro Cultural Center is dedicated to dance as a living cultural tradition. Presented in partnership with Creative Greensboro, this space explores how movement carries history, identity, and community forward. Dance marks celebration, faith, migration, resistance, and belonging. It connects generations and keeps cultural knowledge alive through shared practice.

On the first floor, visitors will experience the world of dance through live performances, traditional costumes, and cultural storytelling, showcasing the rich diversity of movement traditions.

On the second floor, visual artists will capture the energy of dance through the exhibition "Sound and Color." Artists are invited to display existing works from their portfolios that capture the rhythm, emotion, and spirit of movement in abstract and imaginative ways. Together, these works will create a dynamic visual backdrop to the music, dance, and cultural exchange unfolding throughout the festival.

Each participating artist will be provided:
- A free-standing, two-panel gallery wall display set to display their work. Each panel of the display set is 5 ft. 7 in. (height) by 2 ft. (width) and holds 25 lbs.
- One additional display panel is available upon request.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Emerging, mid-career and established independent artists or creative entreprenuers are encouraged to apply.

All artwork must be original work by the artist created within the last five years, not mass-produced, and within at least one of the following categories:

2-D MIXED MEDIA: Two dimensional, wall-hung artwork using the combination of two or more distinct media in a collage type manner.
3-D MIXED MEDIA: Original work of three dimensions which incorporates the union of three or more media or physical materials and can still be hung/displayed on a wall. Display of artwork should not require a pedestal, floor space or additional accommodation.
DRAWING / GRAPHICS / PRINTMAKING: Original works made with pen, pencil, color pencil, charcoal, or traditional printmaking techniques, including etching, engraving, lithography, serigraphy, or woodcuts. Original prints must be signed and numbered.
MOSAIC ART: Coherent pattern or image in which each component element is built up from small regular or irregular pieces of substances such as stone, glass, or ceramic, held in place by plaster/mortar, entirely or predominantly covering a plane or curved surface.
FIBER/TEXTILE ART: Any type of original artwork that uses textiles and fibers, including cotton, linen, wool, silk, rayon, polyester, nylon, plarn, and/or acrylic.
PAINTING: Original work using oil or acrylic paint, gouache/watercolor or pastel on canvas, paper, or board.
PHOTOGRAPHY / DIGITAL ART: Original artwork created by the artist utilizing an SLR or DSLR camera, and any artwork where digital technology is an essential part of the creation process; artwork can be printed with traditional darkroom, inkjet, or laser printing technologies. No commercial photography. Original prints must be signed and numbered.

Applications are due by August 9 at 11:59 p.m.
- Eligibility: Artists who are North Carolina residents are eligible to apply.
- Artists will be notified of their selection by August 17, and their work will be displayed September 18-20, 2026, for the duration of the NC Folk Festival.
- Artists will be responsible for installation and de-installation of their work.
- Load-in and installation will take place Thursday, September 17; de-installation and load-out will take place Monday, September 21.
- Artwork should be displayed with artist name and email, medium, size and price. Artists will be responsible for handling any inquiries about purchase of their artwork.
- Artists will not be required to pay a vendor fee in order to display their work for sale. This is not a compensated opportunity.
