Following on from the success of last year, the Westmeath Examiner is proud to launch the Community & Sports Awards for 2026. These awards are designed to acknowledge the excellent work done by individuals and groups in our local community and to highlight the outstanding achievements by teams/individuals in our sporting arenas. This is your opportunity to nominate an individual or a group who are deserving of one of the awards listed below, or if you are part of a group that you feel has contributed to your community. Closing date for entries is midnight on September 4th.

Social Enterprise of the Year (sponsored by Westmeath Co Co) A social enterprise or social business does not have profit as its only goal; instead it seeks to maximise profits while maximising benefits to society and the environment. Profits are principally used to fund social programmes. Do you know of a business who would deserve this award? If you do, please nominate it today.
Club of the Year This award will go to a club who make a difference to their locality and the people who live there. It could be a sporting club or a social club, but it will be a club who matter. If you would like to acknowledge a group who make a difference and enhance local lives, nominate them now and give them the accolade they deserve.
Carer of the Year Caring is a role that can be unrecognised or under-recognised, but without the work of these exceptional people, society would not function and the healthcare system would be under even greater pressure. It might be a family member or someone else who goes beyond the call of duty – if you would like to see them receive public recognition for their efforts, nominate them today.
Unsung Hero The unsung hero in your community is the person who does great work but receives little or no recognition for it. Mostly, such people are not interested in the recognition; they do what they do because they love doing it and because they know it makes their community a better place. Their preference to remain in the background does not mean, however, that we ignore them; we appreciate what they do, and this award gives a chance to show that publicly. Young Sports Star of the Year The dedication and commitment of young sports people in Westmeath is truly extraordinary and this award celebrates the great talent we have in our community which we can be very proud of. These young people are an inspiration to us all and if you are aware of such a sports person, this is your opportunity to nominate them for this award in the hope that it will motivate them even more and that they will continue to achieve great things in their chosen sport
Outstanding Achievement of the Year Sometimes people who don’t win that gold medal or enjoy success put in immense effort and achieve great things in their quest for glory. This award is aimed at such sports people and these can be great ambassadors for their sport. If you have someone who fits into this category, please nominate them for the award.
Hall of Fame There are many great people across Westmeath who have made an outstanding contribution to the community and have been leaders in giving people an opportunity to get involved in sport. Age does not matter for this category and if you know someone who may qualify, perhaps a volunteer who has made a big impact for many years, don’t hesitate to nominate them.
Team of the Year This category is open to all clubs in the county and if you think your team has achieved something remarkable, regardless of the sport, you can tell us why they are deserving of such an award. It is open to all sports, including Gaelic football and hurling, camogie, rugby, hockey, basketball, angling, golf or darts, or indeed any other discipline you consider worthy of an award. These teams represent their club, school and community with distinction and deserve our recognition.
