  • Join Girl Scout Volunteers for a day of hands-on and engaging training at Camp Anna Behrens.

    Sessions available include First Aid/CPR (Red Cross), Troop Camping Skills, Songs and Games, Archery Level 1 Certification, etc. Sessions making their debut include Project Wild, Getting Your Girls Outdoors, Christmas Crafting, and a new twist on Archery for Fun! Every session is designed to provide hands-on learning and ideas you can immediately put into practice with your girls.

    Pop Up Shop:

    The Girl Scout Pop Up Shop will be open from 12:00 pm-2:00 pm on Saturday. 

    Round Tables
    Connect with fellow volunteers’ with troops at the same Girl Scout level as you! Round tables provide an opportunity to brainstorm ideas, collaborate, share best practices, and discuss successes and challenges in an informal, supportive setting. Grab your lunch and join the conversation with other troop leaders and volunteers who understand your experiences.

    Your $50.00 fee will help cover the cost of supplies, continental breakfast Saturday and Sunday, lunch and dinner Saturday, beverages, snacks, and lodging. Lunch will include a taco bar and dinner will be provided by Salvatore’s Italian restaurant. Several sessions have an additional charge to cover the supplies needed.

     

  • Facilitator Bio's

     

    Rachael Wright : Rachael serves as the Girl Experience Program Coordinator for the Muskegon Lakeshore area with a background in elementary education. Rachael is passionate about creating unique opportunities for Girl Scouts that spark curiosity, inspire lifelong passions, and build confidence through hands-on experiences. She also continues to expand STEM and outdoor education opportunities at the Betsy Cutler House. 

    Heather Oom: Heather is a lifetime Girl Scouts. She grew up at Camp Anna Behrens attending summer camp, earned her Counselor in Training pin and the worked as a staff camp counselor. Heather is mom the three daugher's and is their troop leaders. She enjoys singing songs, challenging girls and all things camp! Outside of Heather's Girl Scout life she is a special education teacher.

    Karen O’Brien: Karen is a lifetime, Girl Scouts. Karen has been involved with OWLS Adult Resource Weekend since its inception in 2019 and has facilitated many sessions for OWLS. Karen has served as the Director of Mackinac Island Scout Service Program.

    Sharon Hughes:  Sharon is a lifetime Girl Scout and an experienced camper. Sharon facilitates Troop Camping Skills and Testing Out of Troop Camping Skills and assists in the updates and maintenance to Troop Camping Skills.

    Melanie Ver Duin: Melanie is a long-time Girl Scout troop leader for both her daughters and is a volunteer with Mackinac Island Scout Service Program. Melanie is an avid hiker with many successful trails under her backpack.

    Jess Faubus: Jess serves as the Community Membership Manager, helping connect girls and volunteers with Girl Scout opportunities in their communities. She is also a troop leader for her daughter’s troop and believes strongly in the Girl Scout tradition of girl-led experiences, empowering girls to make decisions, lead activities, and shape their own adventures. Jess enjoys supporting girls as they build friendships, confidence, and new skills through Girl Scouts. Before becoming a staff member Jess was a special education teacher.

    Barb Gatchel: Barb serves as a Community Membership Manager, connecting with communities to welcome new girls and volunteers while supporting troop leaders and Service Units. She is active on the Gold Award Support Committee. She also loves to share her passion and knowledge of backpacking, camping and troop travel within Girl Scouting. As a former troop leader for her three daughters, she now takes great joy in watching her granddaughters experience the adventures and opportunities of Girl Scouts.

    Lesley Robinson: Lesley serves as the Director of Girl Experience, Volunteer Engagement, and Properties. A lifetime Girl Scout, she is passionate about creating meaningful experiences for girls and supporting the volunteers who make those opportunities possible. Lesley has served in a variety of roles as Girl Scout staff and, prior to joining GSMISTS, worked with the Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina. In her free time, she enjoys going to music festivals, especially ones that include her favorite band, The Avett Brothers.

    Savanah Cool: Savanah has spent 17 years supporting families across Michigan, from nonprofit work to her current role as Director for the Great Start Collaborative. A lifelong Girl Scout, troop leader, and Service Unit Director, she blends professional trauma-informed care with real troop experience. As a Certified Trauma-Informed Coach and trainer in the Strengthening Families and HOPE frameworks, Savanah equips leaders with practical tools to support every scout’s mental well-being.

    Rachel Franklin: Rachel is a dedicated longtime Girl Scout volunteer whose service includes leading her daughter's troop and previously serving as the Service Unit Director for the Holland area. Rachel is also the owner of a local Challenge Island franchise, an educational STEM/STEAM program that engages children in hands-on team challenges designed to build skills in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Through her work with Challenge Island, Rachel is able to combine her passion for Girl Scouting and STEM education by facilitating exclusive Challenge Island programs for (GSMISTS).

    Andrea Hornby: Andrea has a background in early childhood education with over 12 years of teaching under her belt. Over the course of a 15-year career with Girl Scouts, she served in a variety of roles, including Program Manager, Placement Specialist, and First Year Troop Support and Volunteer Training Coordinator. Her experience supporting both girls and volunteers has given her a deep understanding of the Girl Scout mission and the power of positive mentorship. Andrea is passionate about empowering adults with the tools, confidence, and support they need to create meaningful opportunities for girls to build leadership skills, grow in confidence, and reach their full potential.

    Nikki Foster: Nikki serves as the Girl Experience Partnerships and Program Coordinator for Northern Michigan. She joined Girl Scouts as a Brownie and has been involved in the organization ever since. With a background in summer camps with the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, she loves outdoor activities and has been teaching archery for over 5 years. Since joining GSMISTS, she has focused on bringing more programming opportunities to Northern Michigan and is excited to provide volunteers with more resources for their Girl Scouts.

    Mandi Garvey: Mandi is a lifetime Girl Scouts and is a troop leader for her daughter’s troop. She owns her own business, Michigan Born and Raised, one of the many services they offer is Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

    Korrie Halmond: Korrie is a long time volunteer. She has served in a variety of roles for Service Unit 319 including; Product Program Manager, Camp Director, and Recruiter as well as being a troop leader for two troops. Korrie is also a GSMISTS facilitator for Small Craft Safety training as well as being an instrumental part of OWLS Adult Resource Weekend. 

    Amber DenBesten: Amber is a longtime Girl Scout volunteer who serves as the leader and co-leader of two troops. In addition to mentoring and inspiring girls through her troop leadership, she serves as the Event Manager for Service Unit 319, helping create meaningful experiences and opportunities for Girl Scouts across the community.

    Kelly Grimm: 
    Kelly is a dedicated Girl Scout leader for a multi-level troop and proud mother of two daughters who are members of the troop. She is an enthusiastic and dependable leader who is always willing to jump in and support activities. Kelly has a special gift for partnering with fellow volunteers, encouraging and inspiring them while helping them discover the same joy and fulfillment in Girl Scouting that she has found herself.

      Description: 

      Discover how a simple act of kindness can create a lasting impact. In this session, participants will learn about the Kindness Garden, a community-inspired project built on the idea of "take a rock, leave a rock." Decorated rocks carry messages of encouragement, inspiration, and kindness that can be shared with others. During the session, volunteers will create their own kindness rocks and explore ways to use the Kindness Garden concept to spread positivity, foster connections, and inspire acts of kindness throughout their communities.

      Recommended For: Volunteers that are interested in learning more about primitive camping. This is a great session to take if you are thinking of taking Wilderness Camping Training in the future.

      Description: 

      This session will introduce to the world of primitive camping. Leaders will learn essential outdoor skills, safety practices, and planning strategies to create meaningful and adventurous camping trips that align with Girl Scout values and outdoor progression. You will explore the principles of primitive camping and how it differs from traditional camping. Explore ways to incorporate Girl Scout traditions, badge work, and team building into the camping experience, gear & prep: overview of necessary equipment, packing lists, and site selection and safety & planning: emergency procedures, risk management, and group supervision tips. Discuss how to plan and prepare for a successful troop camping experience with minimal amenities. This is an introductory session and does not count towards Troop Camping Skills or Wilderness Camping trainings.

      As Girl Scouts grow into Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors, their worlds expand—and so should their badge work. This session explores practical strategies for engaging older girls by connecting badge requirements to their real-life experiences, interests, and future goals. Participants will learn how to shift from “checklist” badge completion to meaningful, girl-led exploration by incorporating school, jobs, extracurricular activities, social issues, and personal passions into badge activities. Through interactive examples and collaborative discussion, leaders will gain tools to help girls reflect on their lived experiences, apply critical thinking, and take ownership of their learning. We’ll also cover ways to adapt badge requirements while staying aligned with GSUSA guidelines, making space for flexible pathways that respect teens’ busy schedules and diverse commitments. By the end of the session, leaders will be equipped to create authentic, relevant, and empowering badge experiences that resonate with older girls and strengthen their leadership skills.

You’ll learn simple tips for helping girls feel confident with the equipment, understand the basics of range awareness, and celebrate every “hit”—even if it’s just the target stand!

      The focus is all about fun, trying something new, and cheering each other on. No experience needed—just a willingness to help girls explore, experiment, and enjoy the thrill of sending an arrow flying.

      Note: This session does not provide the Level 1 Archery Certification a volunteer needs to do archery with their girls.

From troop planning to day-to-day coordination, discover how simple, intentional actions can ease your workload and fill the buckets of your Girl Scouts and their families.

      Description:

      This is a hybrid course offered by USA Archery and facilitated by a certified USA Archery trainer. The training will provide the necessary tools to maintain high level safety on and off the range and will prepare Girl Scout troop leaders and volunteers to teach beginning archery programs to a variety of ages and abilities.
      Students must:

      *Complete online learning module prior to attending in-person Practical Course
      *Demonstrate application of range safety by completing in-person Practical Course
      *Demonstrate ability to safely shoot a bow and arrow and teach basic archery skills,
      *Pass the written exam with a score of 75% or higher,
      *Complete and submit the Applicant Data Form to the course instructor for submission to USA Archery.

      The certification is for 3 years from the date of completion of the course.

Through engaging discussions, hands-on activities, and real-world examples, volunteers will learn effective strategies for coaching girls to set financial goals, create budgets, track progress, and make informed decisions. The session also highlights age-appropriate approaches for maintaining girl-led experiences while fostering confidence, responsibility, leadership, and lifelong financial skills.

      This session gives volunteers a simple, confidence building overview of how to plan troop activities and outings. Leaders learn how to turn an idea into a workable plan by choosing age-appropriate options, thinking through logistics, and preparing the details that help an outing run smoothly. The session highlights easy ways to keep planning girl led by involving girls in brainstorming, decision making, and shaping parts of the schedule. Volunteers also learn GSMISTS guidelines for activity and trip planning, which forms are required and when, and how to determine which activities need council approval.

The Kiskey Science Center was made with Troops in mind keeping flexibility and creativity on how you want to use the science center: start a project, work towards badges, or discover something new.

      Discover the power of visual storytelling through two exciting art forms! Explore how artists communicate ideas, emotions, and stories through comics and collages. Create original comic strips, develop unique characters, and learn the fundamentals of sequential art. They will also experiment with color, texture, and composition as they design creative collage projects using a variety of materials. Through imagination, artistic expression, and creative problem-solving, girls will work toward earning both the Comic Artist and Collage Artist badges while building confidence in their artistic abilities and sharing their unique perspectives with others.

      Ready to take the next step in leadership? The Cadette Program Aide Pin is a leadership award that gives girls the opportunity to strengthen the skills needed to become effective leaders. In this session, explore ways to guide your Cadettes as they learn what it means to work with younger girls, practice age-appropriate activities, and build leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. You’ll also gain ideas and activities to complement the Leadership Activity Guide curated by GSUSA.

      Description:

      The Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course incorporates the latest science and teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies to help victims of any age - adults (about 12 years and older) and pediatric (infants and children up to 12 years of age). Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

      Description:

      "Learn and practice small craft safety! This training permits GS volunteers to facilitate canoeing and kayaking with their Girl Scouts.
      The course is open to a maximum of 8 adult volunteers. The in-person skills assessment is facilitated by 1 instructor and supported by a supervising lifeguard.
      Please note, this is HYBRID training. Completion of this course involves:
      1. Completing gsLearn video modules (Approximately 30 min in length)
      2. Passing online exam prior to in-person training (80% or higher) (approximately 30 minutes total test time)
      3. Successfully completing the in-person training and skills assessment with GSMISTS on June 15, 2024.
      Participants must demonstrate:
      • Swimming ability
      • Shore based rescues
      • On-water rescues
      • Self-rescues
      • Supported rescues for other boaters
      Completing GSMISTS Small Craft Safety permits Girl Scout volunteers to:
      • Facilitate Girl Scout canoeing and kayaking near shore, on flat, no current bodies of water and within the parameters set by Safety Activity Checkpoints.
      This training is valid for 2 years after completion.
      NOTE: Once you are certified in Small Craft Safety, you will have the option to support GSMISTS programming and you will be refunded your training cost! "
