• Support Safe Sidewalks for Pedestrians

  • Electric bikes, motorized scooters and stand-up mobility devices are popular modes of transportation across San Francisco. There has been much innovation around micromobility, yet few guardrails exist to protect pedestrians. And, with borderline motorists now taking up additional real estate beyond just the streets or bike lanes, and cutting up onto the sidewalks, micromobility is now the second leading cause of trauma-related injuries among older adults in San Francisco, following falls, according to SF General’s ER personnel.

To address this ballooning issue that adversely impacts the day-to-day lives of many San Francisco residents, the Board of Supervisors passed Resolution No. 540-25 in October 2025 to promote more aggressive SFPD and SFMTA Streets Division enforcement to curb the public safety hazards caused by e-bikes, e-scooters and the like. But because these motorists are agile and compact, they pose a real issue to policing and enforcement. Still SFMTA and SFPD have not shown the necessary commitment to putting a stop to this dangerous behavior.

While channels are in place to criminalize and punish motorists who threaten our city’s pedestrians, accountability and adequate enforcement are absent. AB 875 and other state bills authorize officers to issue citations to offenders and impound their vehicles for unsafe micromobility activity. But, these legislative efforts don’t appear to be doing the job, and the current situation has become dire, with SF General reporting multiple related injuries daily — double the cases compared to five years ago, a roughly 8% increase year over year. This is an enforcement not an authority issue. Our citizens want to see that these laws are more than just words on paper and actually translate to public safety outcomes.

It’s time for our law enforcement personnel to prioritize keeping our sidewalks safe from motorized danger.
