  • FOUNDATION ONE

    Purpose

    Introduction

Purpose gives direction to our lives.

For many people, work naturally provides purpose through responsibility, contribution and achievement. Retirement offers the opportunity to discover new sources of meaning, but that journey often requires thought and intention.

Please indicate how much you agree with the following statements:

  • I have something meaningful to look forward to most days:*
  • I feel that my experience and skills still have value.*
  • I regularly contribute to something that is important to me.*
  • I feel optimistic about the opportunities this next chapter of my life may bring.*
  • Purpose isn't something we lose when we retire.

    It's something we rediscover.

  • FOUNDATION TWO

    Identity

    Introduction
Many of us spend decades introducing ourselves by our profession.

    "I'm a police officer."

    "I'm a teacher."

    "I'm a manager."

    Retirement invites a new question:

Who am I beyond my job title?

  • I am comfortable describing myself without referring to my previous career.*
  • I have developed interests that reflect who I am today, not just what I used to do.*
  • I believe my value as a person is greater than the work I once performed.*
  • I am comfortable describing myself without referring to my previous career.*
  • Reflection

    Retirement changes what we do.

It doesn't change who we are.

  • FOUNDATION THREE

    CONNECTION

  • Introduction

Retirement often changes the people we see each day.

The workplace conversations, shared experiences and friendships we've built over many years may naturally become less frequent.

Strong connections with family, friends and the wider community play an important role in helping us enjoy a fulfilling and rewarding retirement.

Take a moment to reflect on the following statements.

  • I regularly spend quality time with people whose company I enjoy.*
  • I feel connected to my local community or groups that are important to me.*
  • I have people I can talk to when I need support or encouragement.*
  • I make an effort to build and maintain meaningful relationships.*
  • Martin's Reflection

One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves in retirement is staying connected.

During my years in the Police and through decades of volunteering with Rotary and community organisations, I've learned that people thrive when they feel valued, included and connected. Retirement doesn't mean stepping away from people—it can be the beginning of building new friendships and discovering communities where your experience is still needed.

    Reflection

    Friendships don't happen by accident.

They grow through time, kindness and shared experiences.

  • Foundation Four

    WELLBEING
"Looking after yourself allows you to enjoy the years ahead."

  • Introduction

Our wellbeing influences every aspect of our retirement journey.

Good health is about more than avoiding illness. It includes our physical health, emotional wellbeing, mental resilience and taking time to enjoy life.

Looking after yourself isn't selfish—it's one of the greatest investments you can make in your future.

Take a moment to reflect on the following statements.

  • I make time to look after my physical health through regular activity or exercise.*
  • I generally feel positive and optimistic about my life.*
  • I have healthy ways of managing stress, change and life's challenges.*
  • I make time to relax, recharge and enjoy the things that bring me happiness.*
  • Martin's Reflection
I've learned that wellbeing isn't about being perfect. It's about making small choices each day that help us enjoy life a little more.

Living with Multiple Sclerosis has reminded me that we don't always control the challenges life presents, but we can often choose how we respond to them. Retirement gives us the opportunity to slow down, appreciate what matters most and invest in our own wellbeing—not only for ourselves, but for those we love.

    Reflection
Looking after yourself isn't a luxury.

It's the foundation that allows you to continue living with purpose, confidence and joy.

  • FOUNDATION FIVE

    PREPARATION

"Retirement is about preparing for life, not just finances."

  • Introduction

Financial preparation is important, but it is only one part of a successful retirement.

Planning for tomorrow also means thinking about how you would like to spend your time, where you would like to live, the relationships you want to maintain, the activities you hope to enjoy and the contribution you still wish to make.

A thoughtful plan does not remove every uncertainty. It gives you direction, choices and greater confidence as life changes.

Take a moment to reflect on the following statements.

  • I have thought carefully about how I would like to spend my time in retirement.*
  • I have discussed my expectations for retirement with the people closest to me.*
  • I have considered how my home, health and lifestyle needs may change over time.*
  • I have identified activities, goals or experiences I would like to pursue in the years ahead.*
  • Martin’s Reflection

A plan does not have to predict every detail of the future. It simply gives us a place to begin.

Throughout my working and community life, I have learned that circumstances can change unexpectedly. Planning helps us respond with greater confidence, while still leaving room for new opportunities, relationships and experiences we may not yet have imagined.

    Reflection

The future does not need to be perfectly mapped.

It simply deserves some thoughtful preparation.

  • FOUNDATION SIX

    LOOKING FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE

Confidence grows when we believe the future still holds possibilities.

  • Introduction

Confidence is not about knowing exactly what the future will bring.

It is about believing in your ability to adapt, grow and continue living a meaningful life, whatever the years ahead may hold.

Retirement is not the end of your story—it is the beginning of a new chapter. The experiences, knowledge and resilience you have developed throughout your life remain valuable and can continue to make a difference.

Take a moment to reflect on the following statements.

  • I feel confident about my ability to adapt to the changes retirement brings.*
  • I believe the years ahead still offer opportunities for personal growth and enjoyment.*
  • I feel hopeful about the future and the possibilities it holds.*
  • I believe I still have valuable contributions to make to my family, community or the wider world.*
  • Martin's Reflection

When I retired from the Police, I discovered something that changed my life. My career had ended, but my purpose had not. Through volunteering, writing, speaking and creating The Still Needed Academy™, I realised that our experience never loses its value—it simply finds new ways to serve others.

Whatever your journey has been, I hope this assessment reminds you of one simple truth: you are still needed.
