• EIT Tairāwhiti in partnership with Trust Tairāwhiti is offering a Master’s scholarship to support a Māori student undertaking applied research in advanced technology areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, drone technology, computer vision, and intelligent systems. This scholarship is designed to support a postgraduate learner who is interested in applying innovative technology to real-world regional challenges and contributing to the development of future technology capability in Tairāwhiti.

    The purpose of this scholarship is to support postgraduate applied research that connects advanced technology with regional needs. The scholarship aims to help a Master’s student undertake a meaningful research or deployment project involving AI, robotics, drones, aerospace systems, or related technologies, while also contributing to regional capability building, school and community engagement, and future technology pathways.

     

    Scholarship value: $14,000

    Application closes: 30th September 2026, 11:59pm

     

    Eligibility Criteria 

    • Applicants must be students of Māori descent  who are eligible to enrol in a relevant EIT Master’s programme and undertake an applied project connected to advanced technology.
    • Priority may be given to students from, or with strong connections to the Tairawhiti region.

    Your scholarship submission must include:

    A personal statement addressing the following:

    • Career goals and future ambitions - Outline your career aspirations and how your education will help you make a positive contribution to your community or chosen field.
    • Personal strengths and challenges overcome - Share key experiences that have shaped your character and personal growth.
    • Academic achievements and educational aspirations - Highlight any academic successes, why you have chosen this field to study, and what you hope to achieve through further study
    • Community service and contribution - Explain how you have supported community, family, or cultural groups, and the impact of your involvement
    • Passion for computing, technology, and innovation - Describe any experiences, projects, or learning opportunities that have helped develop and strengthen your interest for computing, technology, and innovation.
    • Scholarship impact - Explain why you are applying for this scholarship and how it will support your educational journey.

     

    A letter of support from one of the following people or groups, explaining how and why they believe this scholarship will support you. This letter can come from either one of the following groups or people:

    • Community organisation or representative
    • Lecturer, tutor, or school teacher
    • A sports club or coach
    • Church or faith group

     

    In addition, we also ask for the following documents to be provided:

    • Your CV
    • Current academic transcript or NZQA record of learning
    • Evidence of application, enrolment, or eligibility for the relevant Master's programme

     

     

    Application outcome:

    The granting of this scholarship will be assessed by a panel comprising of members of EIT and Trust Tairawhiti.

  • RECIPIENT OBLIGATIONS

    As a condition of accepting the Māori Master’s Applied Technology Scholarship, recipients must:

    1. Enrol in and actively participate in the relevant master’s programme.
    2. Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
    3. Complete the agreed Master’s applied deployment project.
    4. Meet regularly with the academic supervisor.
    5. Provide progress updates as required.
    6. Participate in relevant outreach, school engagement, community, iwi, or industry activities where appropriate.
    7. Present project outcomes internally or externally if requested.
    8. Act as a positive representative for the scholarship and EIT where appropriate.
    9. Acknowledge scholarship support in presentations, reports, or publications where appropriate.

    Inform EIT if their enrolment status or circumstances change.

    The scholarship may be withdrawn, or payments stopped if the recipient does not enrol, withdraws from the programme, does not maintain satisfactory progress, does not meet agreed project requirements, or breaches EIT policies.
