The purpose of this essay is to help us evaluate your ability to communicate scientific ideas clearly and reflect on your experiences.

We encourage you to write about your own experiences and perspectives rather than restating information from your CV/resume or describing our fellowship program. Specific examples and thoughtful reflection will provide a stronger response than general statements about your qualifications. During interviews, finalists may be asked to discuss or elaborate on their essay.
In 500 words or less, describe an experience from your research, clinical training, or education that shaped your interest in communicating science or medicine. Explain why the experience was significant, what you learned from it, and how it influenced your perspective and career goals. Conclude by describing how those experiences have prepared you to contribute to and benefit from our fellowship.
