ROYAL ENFIELD HIMALAYAN CONSERVATION AWARDS

The Royal Enfield Himalayan Conservation Awards aim to discover, celebrate, strengthen and scale nature-linked conservation efforts across the Indian Himalayan Region by providing multi-year funding to support grassroots communities in conservation, and drive long term ecological and catalytic impact.

Geography

Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) states/UTs — Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Assam and West Bengal (hill districts).

Priority Groups

Grassroot and community-based conservationists; community-based organizations, and NGOs working on conservation issues with communities; local youth conservation groups (18 years and above); women’s groups, emerging conservation practitioners; and individuals/organisations working on creative, solutions-approach, interdisciplinary nature conservation; and action research.

Objective

Recognize work and celebrate community-based nature conservation achievements
Strengthen, sustain and scale the work already done and create catalytic impact through award funds
Beyond funds, the awards aim to support mentoring, network building, exposure and learning across disciplines and geographies in the Indian Himalayan Region

Royal Enfield’s conservation initiatives support over 15+ partners and 50+ communities across the Indian Himalayan Region. The programmes support critical landscape and biodiversity conservation—with a focus on the snow leopard and its habitat—alongside nature-linked livelihoods, and fellowships and grants that build youth and community leadership.

Partnerships for resilience and disaster preparedness are underway; and the youth network linked through the Fellowships, Grants and allied partners are starting to adapt digital technology, and app-based citizen science inputs on their landscapes and species.

ABOUT ROYAL ENFIELD SOCIAL MISSION

About 75 years ago, the Himalayas became Royal Enfield’s spiritual home. Royal Enfield Social Mission is catalysing an ecosystem of collective action to meet its long-term vision of partnering with 100 Himalayan communities by 2030 towards building climate resilience.

The Royal Enfield Social Mission projects and initiatives include ‘The Himalayan Knot’ - a textile conservation project, bringing together pastoral communities, artisans and designers for wider market access; ‘The Himalayan Hub’ - a collective learning center for Climate Resilience; a network of community-run ‘Green Pit Stops’, embodying responsible travel; ‘The Great Himalayan Exploration’ in partnership with UNESCO to document Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH); the Royal Enfield ‘Ice Hockey League’ promoting rural sports and winter tourism; conserving biodiversity and wildlife through the Keystone Species project; and ‘Helmets for India’ - a road safety initiative.

Through the Social Mission, Royal Enfield is also encouraging and inspiring one million riders to explore sustainably and ‘Leave every place better’.

In addition to the Social Mission, Royal Enfield also works with local communities near its manufacturing plants in Tamil Nadu, focusing on areas such as education, livelihood, sanitation, healthcare etc. Two multi-decade partnerships with Bodh Shiksha Samiti in Rajasthan and Dr. Shroff Charity Eye Hospital in Delhi, continue to be supported as legacy projects.

1. Category I : Community Conservation Initiatives

Grassroot and community based conservationist groups, community based organizations and NGOs working on conservation issues, local youth conservation groups (18 years and above) and women's groups, emerging conservationists.

Conservation of species, habitats and under-served ecosystems and species (e.g grasslands, avifauna, pollinators); ecological & habitat restoration; community governance (e.g. CCAs), human wildlife co-existence, and community disaster risk reduction (local resilience).

2. Category II : Creative Conservation Solutions

Individuals/organisations working on nature conservation, and creative nature conservation solutions addressing efforts including climate adaptation practices; restoration, water and springshed water management; natural history awareness; species conservation, human-animal co-existence, technology solutions etc. Interdisciplinary approaches with community inclusion will be encouraged.

Up to 25 Lakhs over a period of 2-3 years

3. Category III : Action Research

Individuals/organisations/citizen science practitioners with an idea for action research working on nature conservation. Involvement of community is encouraged.
