Teaching Areas, Available Positions, & Session Dates
Please select your areas of teaching interest, the positions you would like to apply for and your availability for classes and workshops. As most dates are to be confirmed, these are not binding, just give us a general idea of your interests and availability.
Civic Education’s current framework recognizes 14 elements of theatre education. Generally, a class or workshop will focus on 1-3 elements. Please check which of the following you have an interest/experience in teaching. Check as many as apply

Artistic Leadership: Students plan for and lead their cast and crew through the process of production, from the perspective of various positions including directing, choreographing and stage managing.
Auditioning: Students develop effective audition skills.
Character Development: The student makes specific internal and external choices informed by the text.
Dance for the Theatre: Students develop and demonstrate dance genres and techniques for musical theatre.
Dramaturgy: Students research relevant material in regards to a production.
Ensemble and Collaboration: Students work together efficiently as an ensemble.
Movement: Students expand their physical capabilities and presence on stage.
Playwriting: Students explore various approaches to the art of playwriting.
Shakespeare: Students experience the language and culture of Shakespearean text.
Singing for the Theatre: Students develop and demonstrate vocal techniques and styles for musical theatre.
Speech for the Theatre: Students develop and demonstrate skills needed for quality vocal expression.
Technical Theatre: Students develop skills in the following technical theatre art forms: costumes, make-up and hair, properties, sound, lighting; and set design, painting, and construction.
Text Analysis: Students utilize various tools to develop an understanding of the play based on the text.
Theatre Etiquette: Students conduct themselves with appropriate professional behavior as both audience members and performers.
We expect the following positions to be available with Civic Education in the coming season. Please check all that are of interest to you.

Lead Teacher - A teacher who takes primary responsibility for all planning and execution of the class or camp, in conjunction with the Education Director. Experience working with children and youth required.
Co-Teacher - A teacher who shares responsibility for planning and execution of the class or camp, in conjunction with the Education Director. Experience working with children and youth required.
Assistant Teacher - A teaching artist who executes on the plan of the Lead teacher but is not primarily responsible for planning. Assistant teachers are expected to bring their skill set to bear on the needs of the program, and may carry responsibility for activities like warm-ups, ice-breakers, games, etc. Experience working with children and youth preferred.
Education Stage Director - A hybrid teaching/directing position that both takes the helm of an Education show and is responsible for structuring an educational rehearsal process that meets each youth performer at their current level of skill and seeks to raise their knowledge within the context of a show. Experience working with children and youth required.
Education Assistant Stage Director - This position supports the Education Stage Director and brings an individual skill set that can carry responsibility for group management, warm-ups, ice-breakers, games, etc. Experience working with children and youth strongly preferred.
Education Stage Manager - This position supports the production with traditional stage manager responsibilities, combined with strong leadership skills with children and young adults and the ability to manage large groups with empathy and authority. Experience working with children and youth required.
Education Assistant Stage Manager - This position supports the work of the ESM as well as providing technical support as needed. Experience working with children and youth preferred.
Education Music Director - When Civic Education produces a musical or a play with music, the EMD is responsible for teaching music and vocal technique, incorporating age-appropriate methods and adapting the score as needed. They should have an understanding of vocal pedagogy for children and youth, as the show requires. The EMD may be requested to create rote-learning tracks as needed. Experience working with children and youth strongly preferred.
Education Choreographer/Movement Director - This position supports the ESD in creating choreography or specialized movement for Education productions using age-appropriate methods. Experience working with children and youth strongly preferred.
The following are tentative dates/ages for the 26-27 education season. FALL 2026 session will be a 4 week workshop from October 26-November 19. WINTER 2027 will be a 6 week class session from February 22-April 1. SUMMER 2027 breakdowns are not yet available, but weekly sessions will run July 12-August 15, five days a week, 3 hours per day. Dates are subject to change. You should select what generally interests you, don’t worry about specific availability at this time.

I understand by submitting this application that all Teaching Artists and education support staff will be required to pass a background check, complete abuse prevention and awareness training, consent-forward training, and must comply with all Civic Education expectations, including timely communication, expectations of civility, and adherence to the policies relating to drugs, alcohol and tobacco specific to Civic Education. Orientation focused on responsive classroom management, lesson planning, and teaching for artists is available for both new and returning teachers. All classes for students under 14 are led by two teachers. Teaching Artists receive stipends that are paid out in the regular billing cycle following the end of the class, camp, show, or workshop on the 5th or 20th of the month. Classes that fail to reach stated minimums may be cancelled with two weeks notice.
