• Kol Petach // Opening Voice

    Spiritual Vocal Coaching
  • About Em's training and background

  • Em’s spiritual practices and training are rooted in Jewish principles of time, cycles, mysticism and relationship tending to the more than human world. With a robust set of tools for holding space for others, Em offers spiritual and vocal guidance to anyone in need of deepening their relationship to their own creative power and to their higher power. With a commitment to a liberated future for all, they bring their experiences as a spiritual leader, student cantor/hazzan, songwriter, poet, teacher and community organizer to their work of spiritual care.

Em is based on Cherokee land in Western North Carolina, bringing their own Ashkenazi Jewish lineage as a respectful guest as best they can. They trained through Still Harbor Spiritual Direction Practicum, and are currently a student cantor/hazzan at ALEPH Ordination Program.

  • What is Kol Petach?

The Voice: A Portal to God
  • The Hebrew word pair Kol Petach, meaning, “opening voice” or "voice of opening," describes what these sessions will offer.
Petach is an opening, a gateway into something new. Kol is the voice. For those of us that use our vocal chords to speak, we use our kol. And like the Shofar, the voice is a holy instrument. When we are able to open our channel to let the divine Source flow through us, something magical happens. The voice can be a direct portal to God*.

*I use the word God, but if this word is hard for you, please take only what serves you and feel free to replace this word with anything that is bigger than you. Universe, Higher Power, Source of Life, etc.

  • What to expect from a session

  •

    In these sessions we will:

~ Explore the voice as our somatic guide to healing

~ Uncover what our voices want to say in the moment

~ Have time to share what is present in our hearts and bodies

~ Explore how our voices are directly related to our heart and all that flows from it

~ Allow our voices to rise up and connect to something bigger than ourselves

~ Find more alignment in our breath

~ Move our bodies to to allow our breath to move freely

    ~ Make silly sounds

~ Work on a song of your choice to sing, or perhaps even work on writing a song!

In each session, we'll start with where we are, and noticing:

What is present? Where is your breath? Where is your voice today? What needs opening?

We’ll follow where your spirit wants to go. We’ll work on a song of your choice, or maybe do some vocal improv, or songwriting, depending on your interests.

We’ll learn some vocal exercises to help your instrument open up and flow with more ease.

    ~1:1 Sessions~

We can meet on Zoom or in person at my home.

    ~Small Groups~
For small groups, please just reach out to me to let me know how many people will be in your group and we can figure out a time to meet. Small group sessions will be very similar, with everyone in the group having an opportunity to share a bit about their voice and do some breathing and vocal warm ups together. However, the group session will focus on one individual who the group decides to focus on to do some more vocal exploration and singing. Everyone in the group will then have opportunities to share their reflections and ask opening questions in response.
