    ABOUT HANDS-ON HERITAGE:

    Created by local Artist, K.Courage, Hands-On Heritage is a collaborative Skill Share Retreat designed to bring Virginia artists together to exchange creative knowledge, strengthen professional skills, and build meaningful connections within the arts community.

    At the heart of the retreat is a simple idea: every artist has something to teach and something to learn.

    Ten artists will gather for four days of peer-led skill shares, professional development workshops, creative conversations, portfolio and peer review, professional headshots, shared meals, and community building.

    Participants will be asked to contribute their own knowledge by leading a short Skill Share for fellow artists while remaining open to learning from the experiences and practices of others.

     

  • Application DEADLINE: October 25, 2026

    ELIGIBILITY

    Applicants must be:

    • Be 18 years of age or older.
    • Be a current resident of Virginia.
    • Maintain an active creative or artistic practice.
    • Be available to attend the entire retreat, January 28–31, 2027.
    • Be enthusiastic about sharing their craft, techniques, or professional knowledge.
    • Be willing to lead a 30-minute Skill Share for fellow participants.
    • Be open to learning from artists working in different disciplines and at different stages of their careers.
    • Participate fully in workshops, discussions, peer review, meals, and collaborative retreat activities.
    • Help foster a respectful, supportive, and inclusive creative environment.
    • Emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply.
    • Artists working in all disciplines are welcome.

    *Formal arts education or a professional art degree is not required.

  • SKILL SHARE

    Every participating artist will be required to contribute to the retreat in the form of leading a 30 minute hands-on skill share session. A skill share may focus on an artistic technique, creative process, professional skill, business practice, teaching method, or other area of expertise that could benefit fellow artists.
