  • Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches and it’s team of UAV Instructors can only train volunteer UAV operators. Members who want to fly for paid employment will need to contact the Surf Life Saving Australian UAV Service for training.

    Volunteer UAV Operators are highly valued by the Clubs that have UAV equipment for patrol. they are involved in the regular patrol service on weekends and public holidays from the end of September, through to the end of April each year. They are also able to support Clubs at carnivals and events, during surf sports training, and as a member of the Emergency Call Out Team for their Club.

    The SNB Volunteer UAV Operator Induction Program is available to members who meet the following pre-requisites:

    • Financial member of a Surf Life Saving Club in our Branch, Sydney Northern Beaches
    • Are intending to a volunteer UAV Operator for their Club to support patrols, water safety or Nipper activities
    • Are at least 16 years of age
    • Hold at least the Radio Operator Certificate award, or the equivalent unit of competency (and it appears on their member record as proficient)

    As the team of UAV Instructors is quite small at the moment, SLS members wanting to get on a course are asked to be patient while we ramp up our capability. Priority will be given to members of Clubs that have UAVs as part of their patrolling equipment, and have a low number of existing UAV Operators within the Club's membership.

  • It is a requirement that volunteer UAV operators hold an SLS award that includes radio operation skills, and that they are proficient in those skills. We recommend that you arrange for the members that don't already hold the relevant awards are enrolled in a Radio Operator's course at your Club as soon as possible.  Any endorsed Bronze Trainer can conduct the training, and a Bronze Assessor can assess them.
