      Reg 4: Systems must be constructed and maintained to prevent danger. Reg 8: Equipment must be protected from mechanical damage. Reg 14: Work near live conductors must prevent danger.

      Defines acceptable service head types. Specifies resin head construction, metal clad legacy equipment, sealing requirements. Defines inspection criteria for deterioration.

  • 2- Test for Unintended Energisation

    Hazard check — prove contact voltage indicator on known live source first — EAWR Reg 14 / ENA G12/4

    Before testing: Prove your contact voltage indicator on a known live source. Test the front, sides, and cable entry points of the service head. If voltage is detected — stop work immediately and call DNO on 105.

  • 3- Inspect DNO Head for Physical Defects

    Look for visual signs of deterioration or dangerous conditions — ENA G12/4 / BS 7671 S421 / GN3
  • 3.1 Tracking, Carbonisation & Surface Damage

    Test for tracking according to ENA G12/4 inspection criteria. Tracking is a precursor to flashover.

  • Carbonisation present (black deposit, carbon trails)
  • Scorch patterns observed (sustained overload indicator)
  • Pitting or etching on surfaces
  • Moisture-related signs (condensation, rust, staining)
  • Are pieces missing from the head? (add comment if needed)

  • Deformation of enclosure or components
  • Heat damage visible
  • Melted insulation (BS 7671 S421 — fire risk)

  • 4- Measure Current on Earth Conductors

    Identify diverted neutral currents or PEN fault indicators — ENA SB PEN 01 / BS 7671 S542
  • Use a clamp meter on the main earth conductor. Record standing current. Note any fluctuations — earth currents >30 mA may indicate diverted neutral (ENA SB PEN 01).

  • 5- Prove Non-Contact Voltage Indicator & Check Main Earth for Voltage

    Step 1 – Prove your non-contact voltage indicator (NCV) is functioning correctly: Before using your NCV indicator on the main earth conductor, prove it is working by holding it near a known live source (e.g. a standard 230 V socket outlet). The indicator must illuminate or audibly signal. If it does not respond, the instrument must not be used — replace or substitute before proceeding.

    Step 2 – Test the main earth conductor for voltage: A dual-band NCV indicator will illuminate at approximately 12 V and above. Any illumination on the main earth conductor indicates voltage is present and must be treated as a dangerous condition requiring immediate escalation.
