This questionnaire will help us to match puppies with their future owners.Note that the entire litter will be genetically tested (Embark) at about 6 weeks of age. We will place puppies with families based on your lifestyle and wishes, genetic test results, and temperament (tested at 7 weeks and our observations). After you fill out this form we will follow up with a zoom or phone conversation at which points you can ask us questions. But feel free to email any time (abaljon@sdsu.edu). Note that a deposit is not due until the puppies are born.

Tell us about your experience with pets. What qualities are you looking for in a dog?
Why do you believe a Drentsche Patrijshond is a good fit for you? How did you hear about the Drent breed? How much do you know about this breed and where did you learn it?
Tell us about your family (number of adults, children, lifestyle, etc.).Are any family members home during the day? If not, what arrangements will you make for your dog during the day?
Do you have other animals? If so, which types/breeds?
The first two months at your home is an important socialization period. What are your plans for socialization? Puppies can only be alone for brief periods and need frequent feeding. Moreover, they are not fully immunized yet and hence cannot be fully integrated. How do you plan to handle this period?
Where will the dog be kept when someone is home and where will it sleep at night?Where will the dog stay when home alone? Do you plan to crate train the puppy?
What arrangements would you make for the care of the dog if it was unable to travel with you?
Who is going to be mainly responsible for puppy training? Can you afford to ask professional help (puppy class, private trainer) if needed? Do you agree to provide at least basic obedience training to your dog?
How would you describe your training methods? What books or training philosophies have been influential for you?
While Drents are not normally barkers nor destructive beyond puppyhood, they can get bored and be destructive if left alone for extended periods. Do you agree to provide daily (physical and mental) activities and exercise? How much exercise are you willing and able to provide weekly?
Will the dog have access to a fenced backyard? How large?
Drents are hunting dogs and many train and test with Navhda. Keeping their hunting instincts alive is important for the future of the breed. Are you interested in joining a Navhda chapter, receive advice on how to train your dog, and take the Natural Ability test before (s)he is 14 months old? If so, we will pay half of the entry fee (typical fees are $200-250). You do not have to be an experienced hunter to get involved. But if you are, tell us about your plans for this pup as personal and/or sport hunting dog.
Femke and E-Pica both have an exceptional sense of smell, something that is deeply rooted in their bloodlines (both their (grand)fathers are Gloucester Kennel dogs, who are known for their elite noses). Combined with the high intelligence the Drent is known for, this makes them excellent tracking and trailing dogs. Femke approaches the sport with tremendous enthusiasm and has the potential to become involved in search and rescue someday. Are you currently active in tracking/trailing, or is it something you might be interested in pursuing?
Are there other types of activities you might get involved in with your Drent? (E.g. Hikes, Show, Agility, Obidience/Rally, Scant Work, Barnhunt, Therapy dog)
The Drentsche Patrijshond is a rare breed with a small and vulnerable gene pool. A shrinking gene pool can increase the risk of hereditary diseases and reduced fertility. (Both E-Pica and Femke have undergone comprehensive health testing and have been approved for breeding) Occasional breeders play an important role in maintaining the genetic diversity that is essential to the future of rare dog breeds. Would you be interested in breeding your dog?
Will you agree to a spay/neuter contract where all dogs must be at least 18 months of age before a decision is made (this is important for the health of dogs, not related to breeding decisions)?
Are you willing to give the dog back to us or ask for assistance with finding a good home, if you can no longer keep the dog for any reason?
Will you agree to keep us current with regard to your contact information, the dogs wellbeing, and inform us of any problems that may develop with the pup over his/her lifetime?
