The AANHPI Community Appointees Initiative seeks to increase the representation and influence of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) leaders on government boards, commissions, task forces, and advisory bodies. As California's AANHPI population continues to grow in size, diversity, and civic engagement, meaningful representation in public decision-making is critical to ensuring that policies and programs reflect the needs, experiences, and aspirations of our communities. The Initiative will identify and elevate qualified leaders, develop a statewide roster of prospective appointees, advocate for appointments at all levels of government, and provide ongoing support to help appointees succeed and advance equitable outcomes for all Californians.

The AANHPI Community Appointees Initiative is a historic partnership between Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California (AJSOCAL) and the Center for Asian Americans United for Self-Empowerment (CAUSE). Building on decades of advocacy, community organizing, civic engagement, and leadership development, both organizations share a deep commitment to the success, dignity, and self-determination of AANHPI communities. Together, AJSOCAL and CAUSE are working to strengthen AANHPI representation in public leadership, expand pathways to civic participation, and ensure that community voiceshelp shape the decisions that impact California's future.

The AANHPI Community Appointees Initiative will identify potential candidates through self-nominations and community nominations from August 14 - September 9.

From August 17-September 18, candidates will be contacted and participate in a vetting process that includes reviewing their leadership experience, public service background, and community involvement. During this same period, candidates will also begin receiving educational resources and opportunities to build relationships and learn more about public service and appointment opportunities.

Education and relationship-building efforts will continue on an ongoing basis to support candidates and future appointees.

Candidates will confirm their interest and participation by September 25, and the inaugural AANHPI Community Appointees roster will be publicly announced on October 5.

Throughout the process, the Initiative will engage community organizations, advocates, and leaders to build grassroots and grasstops support for AANHPI representation in publicleadership and decision-making roles.

To be considered for inclusion in the AANHPI Community Appointees Initiative roster, candidates should:

• Connection with and/or have knowledge of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities.
• Reside in California.
• Have demonstrated leadership, professional expertise, community service, or lived experience relevant to public service.
• Be willing to serve on a local, regional, or state commission, task force, advisory body, or other appointed position.
• Be willing to participate in the vetting process and engage in educational and leadership development opportunities offered through the Initiative.

Prior public appointment experience is welcome but not required. The Initiative seeks to identify both established and emerging leaders who reflect the diversity of California's AANHPI communities.
