Purpose of the Application
The ICPHSO Board of Directors provides governance and strategic leadership for the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization. Board members are expected to actively participate in the governance, programs, committees, and activities of ICPHSO and to contribute volunteer time in support of the organization's mission.
The Nominating Committee carefully considers each applicant and seeks to develop a Board that brings together a broad range of product safety experience, stakeholder perspectives, professional backgrounds, geographic representation, and leadership capabilities.
Submission of an application does not guarantee nomination or election to the Board. Under the ICPHSO Bylaws, the Nominating Committee selects nominees from Board applicants and presents a list of nominees to fill expiring Board positions. Election is by a majority vote of the Board of Directors.
Bylaw-Based Eligibility
Any member in good standing of ICPHSO is eligible to apply for nomination to the Board. Board membership is open to individuals who represent a constituency with an interest and stake in consumer product safety.
The Bylaws provide for a Board of 11 to 19 members, with broad representation from various perspectives, including government, business, education, trade and professional associations, and consumer and public-interest groups. Only one member from any organization, including subsidiaries, may serve on the Board.
Directors are elected to three-year terms beginning March 16. A Director may serve no more than two consecutive three-year terms. After two consecutive terms, the individual must be off the Board for three years before becoming eligible for nomination and election again.
Selection Considerations
- ICPHSO Engagement and Volunteer Service: Demonstrated involvement with ICPHSO through committees, programs, speaking, moderation, proposals, events, sponsorships, exhibits, or other volunteer activities. Prior volunteer service is valued but is not, by itself, an eligibility requirement.
- Product Safety Knowledge and Experience: Knowledge and understanding of current and emerging product safety issues, trends, practices, and challenges.
- Leadership and Strategic Thinking: Leadership experience and the ability to contribute to strategy, policymaking, planning, decision-making, and organizational goals.
- Governance, Analytical and Decision-Making Skills: Ability to evaluate issues objectively, exercise sound judgment, consider differing perspectives, and contribute constructively to Board decisions.
- Financial Literacy and Stewardship: Understanding of organizational financial matters, budgets, financial oversight, or resource management. Financial-management experience is not required of every Board member.
- Collaboration and Communication: Ability to work effectively in a diverse, inclusive, multi-stakeholder environment, with strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Commitment to ICPHSO: Willingness and ability to devote the time necessary for Board meetings, committees, conferences, volunteer assignments, and other ICPHSO activities.
- Stakeholder Perspective and Broad Representation: The Nominating Committee considers the overall composition of the Board and seeks broad representation of the consumer product safety community.
