  • At SVARA, we approach the Talmud as a guidebook for responding to crashes—ruptures in our lives or in society—and we believe that our students, grounded in the methods of our Rabbinic ancestors, have the power to expand and transform our tradition to meet the crashes of our current moment.  Please respond to the following questions to help us understand your learning background and your interest in studying with us.

  • All learning at SVARA is offered in mixed-level spaces. No previous experience is required for this course beyond knowing the alef-bet.

  • All learning at SVARA is offered in mixed-level spaces. For this course, students are expected to have practice learning in the SVARA method and to arrive to shiur with a confident working vocalization and inside translation of the majority of the Hebrew they encounter.

  • How would you describe your experience with Hebrew? Give us your best guess!*
  • Please indicate your experience with each of the following skills (on a scale of 1–5) where 1 indicates a response of “What’s that?” and 5 indicates a response of “I’m so great at that!” Remember: these questions are just to help us get to know you as a learner. All you need is the ability to decode your alef-bet—don’t worry if these questions have things in them that feel unfamiliar! You’re in the right place!

  • At SVARA, our learning process is centered on the chevruta experience—encountering, translating, and internalizing a sugya (section of Talmud) with learning partner.  Chevruta learning sharpens our understanding of our text while cultivating empathy, resilience, and humility.

  • Do you have a chevruta or someone in mind to learn with?*
  • Please share a bit about your learning style so we can match you with a chevruta:

  • Do you want a relaxed or driven chevruta experience?*
  • Learning in chevruta relies on participants being in accountable relationship with one another with emotional maturity, curiosity, openness to difference, and resilience through discomfort.
