• That's Absurd - Playwright Application Form

  • Samuel Beckett's 1953 play, Waiting for Godot, presents a bleak, futile reality in which its characters understand very little about the world and accomplish even less. This play, among Beckett's other works, aims to represent the absurdity of human existence—that humans relentlessly search for meaning from an indifferent and arbitrary universe. While Beckett may be justified in concluding that life is aimless, his cold, jarring text fails to display the sheer beauty and joy that can be born out of the aimlessness. What if we could write a play that—like Waiting for Godot—put life's moments of nothingness on display, but also gave us a reason to go on living?

  • APPLICATION: 

    The project lead is seeking a small group of playwrights to develop a handful of brief, new absurdist plays. Playwrights selected for the ensemble will collaborate with their fellow playwrights and designers to shape the new works. Playwrights may also be considered to perform in the pieces at the conclusion of the project.

    The deadline for form submission is Friday, September 11, 2026. Immediately after submitting this form, message the project lead, Corin Friese, at (480) 524-9071 to schedule an in-person conversation regarding your application.

    Rehearsals: Monday, October 26 - Thursday, October 29 from 6:30-10:00PM in The Underground
    Tech: Friday, October 30 from 6:00-10:00PM in The Underground
    Presentations: Saturday, October 31 at 2:00PM and Sunday, November 1 at 5:00pm in The Underground

    Note that conflicts will be difficult to accommodate. Conflicts between September 28-October 2 will be more difficult to accommodate than conflicts between October 26-October 29.

  • Tech/Presentation Conflicts

    Due to the wider needs of the entire production team it becomes important that all members of the company are available for all of the tech and presentations of a production. It is very rare conflicts will be accepted during this period (tech and performances). Below are all of the dates and times for technical rehearsals and presentations. If you have any known unresolvable conflicts please list them below, they will be reviewed during the casting period. Do note that these conflicts may affect your ability to be chosen for the production. Reminder that this project conflicts with TARTUFFE.

  • Should you be chosen for the project, the conflicts you have listed above will be the only ones accepted, all other rehearsals you are expected to be available for if called and you are healthy and able to be present. This includes any night classes that may have been required for you to complete your coursework. It is expected that you would work with your professor ahead of time to work around tech and performances.
