Wales-Ireland Early Career Research Mobility Scheme Application Form 2026/2027

The Wales-Ireland Early Career Research Mobility Scheme is funded by the Welsh Government and delivered by the Learned Society of Wales (LSW) in partnership with the Welsh Government. The scheme complements the existing Ireland-Wales strand of the Charlemont Grants scheme administered by the Royal Irish Academy. The Wales-Ireland Early Career Research Mobility Scheme will support for early career researchers in Wales to develop new or strengthen existing research collaborations with partners in Ireland (not including Northern Ireland) through short-term research mobility.

Each application will be assessed on the following criteria:

· Excellence of the research proposal, including outcomes (50%)

· Ability of the applicant to undertake the proposed research (30%)

· The appropriateness of the host/host institution for the proposed research (20%)

Applications will be assessed by a multidisciplinary review panel.

Successful applications are typically succinct and understandable to a non-specialist audience.

Reviewers will evaluate the ability of the applicant to undertake the proposed research, considering their track record in terms of publication and their stage of career.

Comparative judgements about value for money may be considered at the final stage of assessment.

Research Ethics

The Learned Society of Wales requires the research it funds to be conducted in an ethical manner. Please see the UKRI guidance on Research Integrity. Grant applicants must indicate whether their proposed research raises any special ethical issues, and, where appropriate, must confirm that they have secured approval for the proposed research from their respective institution’s Research Ethics Committee (or its equivalent).

Independent researchers without access to formal ethical scrutiny and approval must briefly describe any potential ethical issues as defined in publications by authoritative bodies, one such being the manual on Ethics Self-assessment provided by the EU Commission. They must explain how any such issues will be addressed. The independent researcher's ethics self-assessment and proposed plan for managing ethics issues may be reviewed by the Chair or the review panel one to two experts in the principal research field(s) in which the independent researcher proposes to engage. All researchers should be aware of the legal requirements that regulate their work.
