Are you a maker, craftsperson, artist, designer or researcher working with materials that originate from or have a strong connection to Fife?
Fife Contemporary are currently developing a new research and exhibition project exploring the relationship between Fife’s geology, ecology, craft traditions and contemporary making. The project will trace the journey of materials from landscape to object, uncovering stories, skills and communities that have shaped Fife’s material culture. Alongside historical collections we want to show contemporary practices that continue, reinterpret or challenge these material traditions.
We are particularly interested in people working with materials such as: mud, clay and ceramics, stone, coal and carbon, iron and glass, timber, flax and textiles, wool, natural pigments and other locally sourced or foraged materials. We are especially interested in makers whose practice explores the relationship between material and place, heritage, ecology, sustainability and/or innovation.
We also welcome expressions of interest from people working with materials we may not yet have considered.
This initial call is not an application for an exhibition. Instead, we are looking to identify practitioners who may contribute to the development of the project through conversations, workshops, demonstrations, material research, object loans, collaborative activities or future exhibition opportunities.
This opportunity is open to: any artist currently living and working in Scotland with a clear connection to Fife are eligible to apply. This connection might include, but is not limited to:
- Living or working in Fife
- Having grown up in or previously lived in Fife
- Studying or having studied in Fife
- Having a studio based in Fife
- Sourcing materials from the region or undertaking material research connected to Fife
- Drawing on Fife’s cultural, industrial, ecological, or geological heritage in your practice
We also welcome applications from artists whose connection to Fife may take other forms. If you feel you have a relevant relationship to the area that is not captured above, we would be pleased to hear about it in your application.
We particularly welcome proposals from:
- New or recent graduate artists as an early career opportunity
- BIPOC artists or artists with experience of one or multiple forms of marginalisation
- Artists with additional needs – we welcome Access Statements and work with artists to support access needs
